Things that matter
I was going through some drawers looking for crap I might sell, well, not really crap, but the odd jewelry I haven’t worn in years, things I haven’t worn at all. Things I can part with, because, obviously, I’m not going to sell cryptos…
Being a very messy person, going through some drawers it’s not an easy job, as they’re full of all sorts of things I couldn’t figure out what to do over the years. Just stuff them into the drawer and forget about them.
Besides the two bags of old receipts, I found a real treasure, little bits of the past, memories of places we went to and experiences we shared as a family.
What you can see in the picture is just a small part of the things I couldn’t throw away, because they matter so much to me.
Concert tickets, maps, the odd underground ticket from the first time we went to London (I think) - they all bring back so many memories. Ozzy in the rain, the Hallenstadion in Zurich, getting lost in London, getting lost in Verona, choosing not to wait in line at the Notre Dame, as who would have thought it will burn down…
This is the sort of things I’ve always spent my money on, experiences, travelling together, some places were cheap, some expensive, this no longer matters now, as we have great memories.
The things I’m planning to sell, I don’t remember buying any of those. I never was the kind of person who cannot resist a nice gold ring and I cannot recall ever going into a store to look for jewelry. The few I used to wear were all gifts from my family, which I did appreciate at the time, don’t get me wrong. For many years now I’ve stopped wearing even those. The only jewelry I wear these days are leather armbands and metal bracelets, which mean more to me than gold. I don’t know, but in my country at least, wearing a lot of gold is sort of a status symbol, showing off.
Among the items I could sell are a couple of old gold rings, left behind by some grandparents I presume. Now, I know people invest in gold, but I’m quite sure that my grandmother did not buy a gold ring as an investment for the future. She never thought ‘My granddaughter might want to sell this one day!’
I’m glad she did buy that (hideous) ring, but I’m never going to be that sort of person that invests in jewelry. I don’t care for people to envy my amazing necklace or the expensive decorations in my house. At the moment, our house is decorated entirely in posters, a bowl of seashells brought back from various holidays and an impressive amount of games that belong to my son (that’s what matters to him at this age).
I have friends who dream of buying a Mercedes, I’d be happy with a few concerts…
Welcome to the club. I've already traveled to Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Moldova, just to catch a concert.
Sometimes I get a nice ticket as souvenir, other times a very generic A4 printed document. Meh. I prefer the old school tickets. Why are they being ditched? 😤
Thanks for your article, @ladyrebecca!
I know the feeling. Most of my travels abroad were scheduled around some concert - the sight-seeing part was just a bonus. Funny how other people react when they hear you're taking a trip to Germany in the middle of winter just because there's this guy singing in a bar in Berlin... The only problem is it's a costly hobby :)
Ahem make that the third time.
That looks like a nice record of some fun times! And memories barely take up any space at all.
I've been on a major cleaning/reduction kick lately, too. In fact I just got rid of two huge file cabinets after scanning in a lifetime's worth of handwritten journals and stories. And my library is down to just half a bookshelf. It's so liberating to consider that everything I care about now fits in the back of a Toyota Prius.
