How to solve problems of concentration (Tips for children and adults)
Ideally, from a young age, children get used to being concentrated on a task for a few minutes, increasing the time as the child grows older so that when they reach higher education, such as the University, they will be able to read and study for several hours at a time. It is very important to create an adequate study environment both at school and at home. Parents and teachers will be those who help students to assimilate the most appropriate techniques of concentration.
The most important thing is to avoid interference when doing a job both school and professional. Personal circumstances and lack of motivation are negative elements that help the lack of concentration.
When we have personal problems we spend most of the time going around that concern so we invest the energy in thinking how to solve the problem which makes us not concentrate on the task we are developing.
Performing a monotonous and repetitive task can create a lack of motivation that can make us disinterested in what we are doing.
Creating a work routine from childhood helps to acquire a concentration discipline as soon as possible and to be able to focus attention on adulthood. Since a child begins school they must get used to being concentrated a few minutes each day.
In Primary the children have to concentrate drawing or writing because in this way in Secondary they will be accustomed to working several hours a day and thus in the University they will support a greater routine of work.
The orderly table and a well-lit and quiet room favor that the work environment is pleasant for study.
The attention and concentration is learned over time so you have to exercise it from childhood with techniques and exercises.
When children learn to concentrate during the children's stage, they make better use of time and increase performance
There are different exercises to improve attention and concentration. Below I present some of these exercises:
In a reading activity, time the child is immersed in the story without distractions, or interruptions unless it has to do with the text read.
Make small concentration sessions starting with 2 minutes of games being able to change the game after that time. Increase the duration as the days go by.
An example of a concentration game could be the following: Play by placing ten objects on the table. Ask him to memorize them for 1 minute and cover them. He has to quote them, making as little mistake as possible. After an excursion or a party, ask him to tell you what he has done. This will restructure your memory in a fun way.
- It is also important to let the child get bored so that he can develop his imagination, ability to pay attention and listen to his own thoughts.
Some tips for adults:
Improve your concentration by taking care of yourself: One of the best investments you can make in improving your cognitive performance is keeping our body in perfect condition. Take a healthy diet and do not go hungry. Get enough rest, between 7 and 8 hours of sleep are enough. Dedicate time to leisure and relaxation, this will help you reduce your stress levels and improve your concentration.
Concentration is very often affected by fatigue and mental overload: When performing tasks that require a lot of mental effort, such as studying or working, concentration is impaired if breaks are not made. Schedule breaks of 10 minutes every hour or hour and a half, will help you to resume the task with renewed strength. You can use those minutes to do some stretching, take a walk, go to the bathroom, prepare a cup of coffee .
- Eliminate the distracting elements: If you are one of those who are easily distracted, at the time of performing the tasks it is best to eliminate or minimize those stimuli that can distract you. Keep electronic devices away and if you work with your computer avoid opening irrelevant pages with the task. If the noise distracts you use helmets, headphones or earplugs.
- Prioritize tasksa: Leave complicated tasks for when you're fresh and rested. In this way you can solve them more effectively and then you can dedicate yourself to the simple ones. If, on the other hand, you perform the easiest ones first, you will be tired for when you want to do the most complicated activities. The lists of tasks in order of relevance and complication can help you prioritize.
