Another special evening to hunt for some Muslim food at the local market during Bulan Ramadan. This time is a food known as Murtabak. It is a famous food by Indian Muslim described themselves as Mamak.

Acccording to Wikipedia, Bulan Ramadan is a fasting month was made obligatory (wājib) during the month of Sha'ban, in the second year after the Muslims migrated from Mecca to Medina.

While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations. Muslims are also instructed to refrain from sinful behavior that may negate the reward of fasting, such as false speech (insulting, backbiting, cursing, lying, etc.) and fighting except in self-defense.

Pre-fast meals before dawn are referred to as Suhoor, while the post-fast breaking feasts after sunset are called Iftar. Spiritual rewards (thawab) for fasting are also believed to be multiplied within the month of Ramadan. Fasting for Muslims during Ramadan typically includes the increased offering of salat (prayers), recitation of the Quran and an increase of doing good deeds and charity.

A murtabak is like multiple layers of pancake. The ingredients consist of green onions, minced meats, eggs, and curry sauce.

All the ingredients will be added to a dough and then be fried on an iron griddle. The stir-fried will turn into a spicy folded omelet. Usually, it will be served with a dollop of pickled onions.

The taste of such bite is nicely balanced between the ingredients itself. Not too extremely crispy or soft on the multiple layers of soft dough. Somehow, my taste buds not able to feel the too much of spiciness compare to the same murtabak that I had on last year. Perhaps, I was too hungry to finish the food for that night.

Wow, that martabak is sold by car, it feels really good, but I prefer "canai" without eggs, how can it feel like it can change unlike last year ?, maybe your tongue is in trouble @legendchew😂, however, this is good food hunt by you, thank you .😎

Yes, the car known as "Food Truck" here. I love "roti canai"! Perhaps next time I will write about it. The taste is different than before. It may due to economy issue and the owner use less ingredients/recipe to maintain the quality of the food.

Ramadan is indeed a blessing for many people, especially Muslims

Yes, indeed it is. It's a tough month for Muslim people. It is amazing how you guys survive for that full month.

We also have martabak here in Aceh, legend. Almost every coffee shop has a martabak stall, beside noodle stand. But we here donot mix meat to it. Its only eggs, and some vegetables and spices.

Thanks, legend. Makes me want to go back to Chow Kit .. Hehe.

I heard some martabak are sweet. I think Aceh one is the sweet martabak right? Feel free to come back and visit Malaysia. 😁
