Why are the planes white?

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Each airline has its own logo printed and featured on the aircraft, but they are all very similar - because they are white. The reason for this is not a tradition, but the scientific fact that white color best repels the sunlight as the plane flies, enabling the interior of the aircraft to become less heated.

"It's like putting creams with a protective factor on the body," explains the professor of astronauts at American MIT, R. John Hansman.

In addition, white is more suitable for cracking, oil leakage, and other problems, as well as faster breakdowns, and the aircraft itself is more noticeable during stormy weather. But there is also a reason of financial nature, namely coloring in white more cost-effective than coloring in other colors. (For the same reason white cars are generally cheaper).

What about the white traces they leave?

According to conspiracy theorists, the white traces that remain behind the plane in the sky are so called Chemtrails by which the population is controlled or controlled in some way (either through biological or chemical weapons, as a means of changing weather conditions or as a trigger of disease). This theory emerged in the United States in the 1960s, when the Air Force was accused of spraying the population with secret substances, but this theory is based on a misunderstood quote from the Strategic Document of the University of Aviation, "Time as a Power Multiplier: Possessing Time Opportunities in 2025" which was drawn up in response to a military directive that emphasizes American strategic action for the purpose of retaining military power by 2025.

Scientists claim that white traces are nothing unusual and do not give cause for concern. These are the condensation traces, the visible traces of condensed vapor generated behind the jet engine exhaust. Usually, they occur when an airplane flight over 8,000 meters where the air temperature is below -40 Celsius. When cooling a hot exhaust jet behind a plane, a cloud of tiny droplets of water is formed. If the surrounding air is sufficiently cold, the trail behind the aircraft will consist of tiny ice crystals.

I did not know that is what the white trails behind aircrafts were. Makes sense now, interesting stuff!

Im always happy When I provide some usefull information! Thanks @ovij 😘

Very accurate and interesting info. And even with all this data, you still can find some colored planes (although is becoming less and less common with the introduction of composite materials):
