An Orgy of the Senses.
Warning! This article contains gratuitous amounts of porn. If you don't like porn, then don't continue any further and find something safer on the internet.
For those of you who persisted, I'm referring colour and food porn. If you don't like that, then you too had better surf off elsewhere on the net and find something racier.
Those of you remaining, I assume, share a similar kink for colour form and or find it a double plus if it happens to be food. As a visual artist, and a bit of a foodie, I find visiting the local markets very stimulating for the senses. I definitely know I'm not the only one with this predisposition as I have seen other people on prior occasions photographing the cornucopia of sensory stimulus.
One of the things I have enjoyed in large cities are the food markets, whether it was Sydney, London, Berlin or Barcelona. While the crush of the crowds can sometimes be a bit oppressive, it is soon forgotten as you too squeeze your way forward to grab that delicious bargain.
They say food brings people together, well, it certainly does in places such as these markets. The market sellers certainly want you to bring you together... with their wares, as you walk the narrow isle with people calling out to you from either side, vying for your attention. While sometimes, if you're not in the mood for it, their jockeying can be annoying, it can also be a great deal of fun, as they try to outdo each other with wit and offers.
The hardest thing about these places is not spending more money than you intended. The sellers do have a tendency to be "generous" with amounts they give you. You ask for 200g but end up with 300g and the price that matches. Although, if you do become a loyal regular the bonuses do indeed become truly generous!
It is a favourite past time of mine to head down to these markets on the weekend and take in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes. Going home afterwards is also gives you something to enjoy with a bounty to spread out your dinner table in a feast.
With a belly loaded up on wonderful food and a stimulated mind loaded up by the senses, the creative juices are topped up and ready for studio time.

I miss going to markets and seeing all the random "ugly" fruits and vegetables that get thrown in with the "quality' stuff (because you know they're just odd shapes nothing otherwise wrong with them XD)! There was one we particularly liked to go to and even had a regular seller there that would regularly throw in freebies because we went and got the bulk of our groceries from him every week, as well as just handing my older kids (who were baby and toddler when we were going regularly) their favourite fruits (usually strawberries because he found it hilarious that they ended up with strawberry juice all over themselves and me).
Then the place got gentrified and now there's gourmet and artisan stuff all over where the fruit and veges used to be. I definitely don't miss the crowds though (that area is very pretty and very popular), but at least there was a general good vibe around that made it tolerable.
It seems to be happening everywhere though, maybe food regulations getting even more ridiculous as there was also a much smaller market close to where we moved to that we used to hit up weekly until my partner decided that one of the big chain shopping centres was much more cost effective. I recently dropped into the old market to get a cake from the bakery there for a birthday and the fruit and vege section now looks like what you'd find at your big chain supermarket which changed the whole feel of the place. I haven't had a reason to go back since but I'm kind of scared of what I'll find if I do XP
Yes, the atmosphere is the important part to these places, otherwise, you may as well do as your partner and go to the supermarket. There was one market I used visit in Berlin, where I could pick up enough fruit and veg to last me in excess of a week for five Euro. I would even visit the place if I had nothing to purchase. The market had such a vibe, that it also attracted buskers which made it even more interesting.
Some of the Turkish stall holders were so generous, that as regular customer even if you weren't buying they would often just give you something. So of course, you then remain a loyal customer don't you, and in turn are generous with your own purchases. Those guys really know how to do business. It was funny, sometimes I would return home with so much food because they'd keep on piling extra freebies on top of my purchase.
