Visiting a Cemetery Created In The 1850's.
During our trip up the mountain we stopped at Speck Cemetery where many of my wife's family is buried. She likes to stop and make sure the graves are being taken care of properly.
The cemetery has graves from the 1850's and the majority of the headstones are labeled as Speck, Looper, Norrod or Bowman. Many of Overton County's 'founders' can be found buried here. It is a unique piece of Overton County history and is an absolutely gorgeous spot to take in scenery.
The types of graves shown so far are called tent graves. This was a popular style of burial in the south from the "middle 1800s to the mid-1900s".
This was an interesting grave marker to me. Many of the headstones have markings that are almost unreadable from being weathered but this one is still very readable. I reminded my wife to make sure the engravings are deep on my headstone when that day arrives.
This is the view from the cemetery. We are still on the mountain but we traveled about thirty minutes down the mountain to get here. It is about another 20 minute drive to get completely off the mountain. This is still what people consider the boonies.
These graves are only about 4 feet long and belong to children. It's always surreal to see graves of children with many labeled as dying at birth or from the flu. Could you imagine getting the flu a hundred years ago and wondering if that could legitimately be the day or week you meet your maker?
Thanks for taking this trip with me Speck Cemetery
