Project: Smoke and Hard Light - Imprinted by LightCaptured
Greetings :)
As a part of my life as a photographer, I work on several projects that I call "mine", meaning they are not triggered or paid by a customer.
One of those projects of mine, now that I think of it I believe it is the longest one, I call
"Smoke and Hard Light"
Yes, I make photos in a controlled environment, studio or a room with no air currents and drifts, if possible, of course. I use hard (that could roughly be explained with the word "directional") light and strobes (pro level photo lights), and here I also control the power and the angle of the light.
What I love about this project is that each photograph makes my imagination work. Sometimes it is even about dreams.
Each new picture comes out unique :)
Sometimes those pictures I leave with almost no post-processing, sometimes I spend hours working on specific images to get to the feel of the moment.
Here are some visuals from that project.

Wow, that looks amazing, smoke is very interesting subject or ?object. It changes its shape all the time and none of the photos look identical. I like the light blue light of smoke looks great on black background.
By the way what did you use as a source of smoke? DO you smoke yourself?
Thank you! Indeed, exactly that's one of the reasons I love that project so much - the shapes of the smoke always change and each photo is almost unique :) I love experimenting with coloring of the shadows and highlights with different colors, it changes the mood, right? ;)
The source of the smoke is incent sticks. Adds some nice touch to the room too :)))
I used to smoke a lot when I was studying in the university, almost two packs a day. That was a loooong time ago, 3 decades ago, lol. I don't smoke on a regular basis but once or twice an year I enjoy a nice cigar but only in a good company. My best man gifted me with an original shisha ten years ago and on my last travel to Jordan I bought some tobacco mixtures, but yet, again, lighting up a shisha doesn't happen so often, 4-5 times an year :)
Do you smoke? :)
Yeah, I remember that series of yours.
Wanted to try it with a construction laser..... nothing has worked out so far ))
Great shots!
I think if some motion is added to the laser source/beam this will be very beautiful. Light painting over the smoke... not sure it was done before, sounds creative!
We need to find a good source of smoke. I think I need to find some incense sticks. Just need to go to a shop with items from India :)
Here we have two-three huge Chinese chains with several stores in almost all of the cities, sticks are sold there too, if that helps. ;)
To be honest, I haven't looked for a stick yet. I've just tried improvised remedies such as dried trout mushroom. There's a nice smoke in there too, but it's not as thick and concentrated. Also, I need to find a way to eliminate the draught in the room.
Yes, the air currents and drifts main ruin it all. I close all doors and windows, turn off air conditioning and ask other people, if any, to leave the room :)
There are special smoke sources but incent sticks are the cheapest solution - 10 sticks cost about 1 EUR here, there are also bigger and cheaper packages ;)
... besides, even the movement of your hands and breathing can cause a tornado in front of the lens ))
I'll try to order the sticks online, I think it will work ).
Look what i found in your city :D

An interesting direction for photography, the smoke is unpredictable and it is unpredictably interesting :)
Indeed! That's what I love about it :) Thanks!

Thanks so much!
It's fascinating the only but is I use a phone and the photos are a bit too much, or perhaps too close posted after each other to study/enjoy them. At least that is how I feel it.
👋🍀
Hey, sorry I am not sure I get that. :(
