Samek Mahadan

One of the most beautiful festivals in Nepal celebrates the arrival in the Kathmandu Valley of Dipankar Buddha, the twenty-fourth predecessor of the historic Buddha Shakyamuni. Made by Shakya Newars, more than 200 larger-than-life images are housed in Buddhist Viharas in towns across the valley.

Their bodies are constructed of bamboo and covered with flowing Chinese silk robes. The person inside when they go on procession sees out through the middle of the body and the sculptures tower over the crowd. Their head, hands, earrings and necklaces, and ornate crowns set with semi-precious gemstones are considered the finest gilded copper repoussé work in Nepal.

Every three years they are invited to an assembly in Nagbahal, Pagan and come led by musicians and followed by their devotees to pay their respects to the Malla kings who once lived in the palace at Mangal bazaar and then went in procession at night to Nagbahal. The following day devotees from all over the valley come to offer rice and worship the Dipankara as alms-givers and protectors of merchants.

This and other Buddhist festivals are central to the social life of the Newars and a source of inspiration for many young Newars to pursue a career in the arts.

Tashi Samtenling Monastery Bodhinath,Nepal

This film on a day in the life of the oldest Buddhist monastery nestled along a narrow street within the shadow of the great Buddhist stupa at Boudhanath, Nepal was filmed in 2006. Edited in 2019, there is neither narration nor subtitles and all the chanting and other sounds are as recorded during the filming.

Summoned to morning prayers by the blare of Conch horns and the rumble of large drums the youngest monks arrive first and are greeted by an unexpected visitor. Follow the events of the day and discover why they are rewarded for their prayers and blessings.

Iconography & Textile

In this film, you can see how to draw Buddha’s Face, which fabric they use for their painting, how they use and so on. You can perceive how the craftsman utilizes geometry to draw faces and what extent and procedures to draw buddha's eye. You will be astounded to perceive how arithmetic impacts the workmanship. As I am a mathematician I am delighted in watching this film.

You can perceive how the artist paints with exclusive details. How they bring a work of art alive. A work of art is important just when it becomes alive, look at all the acclaimed artworks. You will feel that artistic creation is conversing with you.

Finally, you can see the extraordinary Fabrics Artist use for their work of art. Furthermore how they make these textiles and how they adjust it and method to preserve it.

Finally, I like to give extraordinary gratitude to Stephen Truax Eckerd and Rabin Lama for their great work. Furthermore glad to be a part of it.
