A long beach walk and the ocean breeze is a sure fire recipe to whet the appetite, especially seeing the catch of the day at the end of that walk!

Coming from a family of fishermen and fisherwomen for that matter, I know just how much planning goes into the sport of Angling.
A visit to the specialty fisherman's store Kingfisher which is a stone's throw from Durban's main beaches, is a must before any big fishing expedition with many temptations for the keen angler.

Walking into the store one is greeted by very old fishing photographs, mounted fish trophys and all kinds of quaint fishing paraphernalia as well as some fish tanks.

I must add right from the start that I'm not in favour of catching fish for trophies like this blue marlin which belongs in the deep blue waters! Those should be released right back to where they belong, we only catch fish for the dinner table, but that's another topic!

So, before going on any fishing expedition, fishing rods and reels need to be checked with fishing line, hooks, sinkers as well as bait always on the fisherman's shopping list.

Tide tables are checked but the sun and moon as well as the weather of course, all influence fish activity. The time of day is also important as fish feed more at sunrise and sunset, and also during full moon.

Fishing was a serious business in our family and led to many discussions with much planning; we always went on annual holidays during wintertime as that also is the best time for fishing here in sunny South Africa and especially on the South Coast of Kwazulu Natal where we have the annual Sardine run with big game fish following the shoals that appear on the East coast.

One also needs the right kind of gear when going fishing and you're sure to find the right stuff here; from sun hats to rock climbing shoes and even underwater gear is sold here.

Salt water as well as fresh water and fly fishermen are catered for here.

I think you'll agree that Kingfisher is the place to go if you need to equip yourself for a fishing adventure!
Many thanks to @dswigle for initiating #marketfriday - a good excuse to go shopping:)

Back to that beach walk I started with - we mostly stay at self-catering resorts when we go away on holiday with friends and each couple take turns in being responsible for a meal. So hubby caught one fish only, not enough to feed all of us, but we wanted something fishy and had frozen prawns in the freezer from a local fish shop plus gorgeous bell peppers, mushrooms and spring onions. A couple of canned smoked Mussels also came out to play and rice was cooked up in no time.

A quick Paella was thrown together in no time with a little help from our friends - much chopping and dicing and sauteeing with loads of garlic and butter; the kitchen looked like a war zone at one stage but there was no fighting in this kitchen, only loads of laughter!

All tossed together to make a very fragrant fishy mess for the Food Fight Friday gang!

Hope you all enjoy it and look forward to seeing your Food Fight Friday mess started by those guys @jlsplatts, @dandays and @idig!

Many thanks to @appreciator for the generous sponsorship, certainly has livened up the #fff arena;)

Whoooaaa... eventhough I was born and spend my lifetime at the coastal area, fishing is not one of my hobby, but I like to watch the fishermen pulling their big net on the beach at the afternoon and they will sell the fresh fish from the sea with cheap price than at the market the next day.

Wheeww.. the prawn's paella.. I'd love to have a plate of it 😂 I like prawn, shrimp..everything about the creatures from the sea

Nice seeing you here @cicisaja, nothing like freshly caught fish not so;) I also love anything from the sea!

But.. I will never eat the raw fish 😁

Did they think you were casing the joint when you were taking all of those pictures at Kingfisher? I bet they had their eye on you didn’t they? “What is this lady trying to pull off?”

Did hubby eat that one and only fish all by himself or...? Was it a whole bunch of prawns with a few fish chunks in there somewhere?

Always a pleasure to see you, @lizelle, I look forward to hangin out with you on Friday’s.

I was very hesitant but hubby and our German guest who came along both spurred me on, shop was quite busy so no one really took notice of me;) Lots more I could have shown but my pc took ill today, almost died, much to my annoyance, will have to let let someone have a look at it!!! It ground to a dead halt, behaved after rebooting but as soon as I opened any MS Office program, it played up, must have something to do with that!!! We cooked the lone fish the next morning and each had a little taste tester;) Glad I could join you again this week, getting a whole load of cooks into the ring, very well done, it's great seeing this!

Whats worse @lizelle? Realizing you didn’t get the bar of soap out of the cabinet mid-shower, computer freezing up, or misplacing your car keys?

You are a wicked man @dandays but I say computer freezing up as I can't do nothing about that! The other 2 can be solved although they both rear their ugly heads every so often!

You post prompted me to find out the difference between prawns and shrimp:

...Shrimp and prawns are two distinctly different animals.

Both shrimp and prawns are Decapod crustaceans, meaning they both have ten legs and possess external skeletons. However, that’s where their classification similarities end. Shrimp belong to the sub-order Pleocyemata, while prawns belong to the sub-order Dendrobranchiata.

Shrimp and prawns have different anatomies.

Prawns have branching gills, claws on three pairs of their legs and second pincers that are larger than their front ones. Additionally, prawns lack the distinct bend in their bodies that is seen with shrimp and each of their body segments overlaps the one behind it in succession.

Shrimp, on the other hand, have lamellar (or plate-like) gills, and claws on two pairs of their legs. Their front pincers are typically their largest. Additionally, shrimp have a distinct bend in their bodies and their second segments overlap the first and third segments.

Very interesting facts @jaichai, thank you for this, I always wondered about the differences!

I cannot believe that I had an unexpected trip out of town and just got home tonight. There were several #MarketFriday posts that, although I read all of them, I didn’t have a chance to respond properly. I upvoted, resteemed, read them all and hopefully gave you a tip.
For this, my sincere apologies. They are all so brilliantly written and I appreciate every single one. Even better, the readers are starting to peruse each other’s and that is the whole intent. So please, do not think I didn’t take the time for you. I love all of them and I cannot tell you how loved I feel every time I receive another one.
I could finish writing them, but, will fall even further behind. So, I apologize once more and trust me, I love that you put so much time and effort into each and every one of them! Thank you and just know I love you!
#MarketFriday loves you!
