Two faithfuls
At the beginning of spring this year I planted some violas in my veggie containers - I cannot remember the name of this one, but the flowers are really beautiful - a pale mauve/blue in colour.
Well, they have grown so well and although we are into the real summer heat, they are still producing masses of blooms.
Not only do they liven up the veggie containers, they attract the beneficial insects and are lovely to pick and put into my salads.
My grand children raised their eyes when they saw flowers in the salad, but with a bit of coaching, they were brave enough to taste them and realized that the taste was actually sweet.
Every day I remove any faded blooms to keep the flowers coming.
Another flower that pops up every year in my containers is Borage.
This is a herb and has the most beautiful star shaped blue flowers that can also be added to salads or frozen in ice trays for summer drinks when you entertain guests.
The leaves of this herb have a hairy feel when picked, but when cooked this goes away and the taste is a bit like cucumber.
The bees love the borage flowers and the plants self seed, so once planted, they will pop up every year.
The colour of the flowers is a brilliant deep blue and well worth having in the garden.
Lovely blooms to add to any garden.
