Lethal Weapon # My favorite movies collection (4)
I present here one of my favorite films (4 in fact). I love Mel Gibson, it is one of my favorite actors and his duet with Danny Glover and Rene Russo is fantastic and funny!
Lethal Weapon
is a 1987 American buddy copaction film directed by Richard Donner, produced by Joel Silver, and written by Shane Black. It stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover alongside Darlene Love, Ebonie Smith, Gary Busey, and Mitchell Ryan. In Lethal Weapon, a pair of mismatched LAPD detectives – Martin Riggs, a former Green Beret who has become suicidal following the death of his wife, and Roger Murtaugh, a 50-year-old veteran of the force, work together as partners.
The film was released on March 6, 1987. Upon its release, Lethal Weapon grossed over $120 million against a production budget of $15 million, and it was nominated for Academy Award in the category of Best Sound. It spawned a franchise that includes three sequels and a television series.
LAPD Homicide Sergeant Roger Murtaugh, shortly after his 50th birthday, is partnered with Sergeant Martin Riggs, a transfer from narcotics. Riggs is a former Special Forces soldier who lost his wife in a car accident two years prior, has turned suicidal, and has been taking his aggression out on suspects, leading to his superiors requesting his transfer. Murtaugh and Riggs quickly find themselves feuding with each other.
After an explosive investigation and many disputes between the two cops.
Riggs spends Christmas with the Murtaughs, having become best friends with Murtaugh and bonding with the rest of the family. Riggs also gives Murtaugh a symbolic gift : an unfired hollow-point bullet which he had been saving to commit suicide, as he does not need it anymore.
Lethal Weapon 2
is a 1989 American buddy cop action comedy film directed by Richard Donner, and starring Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Patsy Kensit, Derrick O'Connor and Joss Ackland. It is a sequel to the 1987 film Lethal Weapon and second installment in the Lethal Weapon series.
Gibson and Glover respectively reprise their roles as LAPD officers Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, who protect an irritating federal witness (Pesci), while taking on a gang of South African drug dealers hiding behind diplomatic immunity. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing (Robert G. Henderson). The film received mostly positive reviews and earned more than $227 million worldwide.
Lethal Weapon 3
is a 1992 American buddy cop action comedy film directed and produced by Richard Donner, starring Mel Gibson, Danny Glover and Joe Pesci, withRene Russo and Stuart Wilson in key supporting roles. It is the third film in theLethal Weapon series.
In the film, which is set three years after Lethal Weapon 2 (1989), Martin Riggs (Gibson) andRoger Murtaugh (Glover) pursue Jack Travis (Stuart Wilson), a former L.A.P.D. lieutenant turned ruthless arms dealer, during the six days prior to Murtaugh's retirement. Riggs and Murtaugh are joined by Leo Getz (Pesci), as well as Internal Affairs Sergeant Lorna Cole (Russo).
Unlike the first two films which received generally positive reviews, Lethal Weapon 3 was met with mixed reviews, but was a box office success, grossing over $320 million worldwide. It was the fifth highest-grossing film of 1992 and the highest-grossing film in the Lethal Weapon series.
Lethal Weapon 4
is a 1998 American buddy cop action comedy film directed and produced by Richard Donner, and starring Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo,Chris Rock, and Jet Li (in his American film debut). It is the fourth and final installment in the Lethal Weapon series.
Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) is pregnant withLAPD Sergeant Martin Riggs' baby; they are not married, but both are thinking about it. LAPD Sergeant Roger Murtaugh's daughter Rianne (Tracie Wolfe), is also pregnant, though he is not told the child is with Detective Lee Butters (Chris Rock) since he did not want his daughter to marry a police officer. Due to issues with the department's insurance carrier over Riggs and Murtaugh's actions as sergeants, Captain Murphy (Steve Kahan) promotes them to captains.
The officers along with Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) come upon a Chinese immigrant smuggling ring after running an ocean-going vessel aground. The captain of the boat escapes. In the subsequent investigation, Murtaugh finds Hong (Eddy Ko) and his family hiding from US Immigration officers to avoid deportation. Murtaugh offers them shelter in his home, and their families, along with Riggs and Cole, quickly bond. Hong reveals he is looking for his uncle, a skilled engraver, who had paid for their passage to the United States.
I have this collection and stll watch them occasionally. Nice write up.
I watched these movies in theatres when they were released.
I could go on for hours about each of these films and the actors Mel Gibon, Danny Glover, and Joe Pesci.
The first film was great and set the stage.
The second film was also great and used the movie as a platform against apartheid. This was timely for the political environment.
The third film was fantastic; however, the movie was used as a platform against the gun industry, which is probably the cause for mixed reviews.
The fourth film was quite nostalgic, bringing the franchise to a close. It was great by itself. The message was against human trafficking.
The introduction of Jet Li was remarkable. I remember the moment and I said, "Who is this guy". As a fan of Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris and the whole karate movie scene, Jet Li came out with force. I followed all Jet Li movies after his Lethal Weapon introduction.

Thank you for your great comment ! Upvoted your last posts ;-)
In the first film he is so young ... :)) It's a bit funny
Yes! I prefer him older 😉
Yes, he has more experience now :))
Yes ;-)
:D
Another gem of a post, love these movies (1, 2 especially) and the characters. The first one is such a great Christmas Movie :). Gibson's portrayal of Riggs is superb in those first two with the intense rage and demons of the character. I watched these for the first time as an oh so young kid when my parents rented them.
George Harrison's Cheer Down at the end of 2 is one of my favorite song-to-credit shots in movies.
Kudos.
Thank you for your comment 😉
