In the past few days, I concentrated on manipulating materials in blender. I learned how to add them to objects, experimented with their properties and used the blender node editor to create shader combinations. For the image that I attached, I used the Glossy BSDF shader and the Diffuse BSDF shader. Combined in different ways they gave me a pretty solid looking donut frosting and dough.
I also made the recommended switch from the "blender render" renderer to the "Cycles render" renderer. Now the entire render is exported differently and scattered lighting is also taken into consideration.
I also modified the icing to make it droop around the edges a little more convincingly.
