The Paso Effect

Paso Robles, in California, has vastly developed into an American Viticultural Area (AVA) with over 26,000 vineyard acres planted with wine grapes since 1990, when there were fewer than 20 wineries in the area. Now, there are nearly 200 wineries that are committed to producing quality wines.

I had the pleasure of watching the movie Sideways. It reminds us that "merlots are quaffable". I think Paul Giamatti was right about that but I needed to test his theory.

Magistrate 2015 Merlot reflects the quality and commitment Paso Robles AVA has achieved. When I opened the bottle, I instantly inhaled aromas of blueberry and smoke from the merlot. The first taste produced nuances of blueberry and cocoa.

After allowing the wine to breathe for 20 minutes, I was in awe with what I tasted next. Medium tannins were apparent, along with flavors of caramel, cherry, and smoke coating the palate. Surprisingly complex this wine is drinkable. I totally recommend this complex merlot with food that is just as complex.

I was brave to try the merlot with the carne guisada, black beans, and Mexican rice I made. Loaded with spices and an assortment of flavors that shock the taste buds, the pairing allows the flavors of Magistrate Merlot to shine through. Enough talking, now get to drinking!
