Your own survival knife? Everybody can make it!

Referring to my introductory post Its me @luckybrenner i was asked wether i could tell how i started with my knife im working on at the moment and what are important steps.

Well... first of all you need a shit ton of information about knife steel. Depending on the purpose of your future knife you need to choose the right knife steel.
The different types of knife steel are defined by adding a variety of mixed elements to the standard steel (chronium, vanadium etc). If you fold and warm the steel in different ways it now appears that you can reduce everything to five key features.

• Toughness (the higher the toughness the more power you will need to break it)
• Wear Resistance (the higher this categroy is the slower the knife will dull)
• Hardness (How easy can you bend your knife)
• Corrosion Resistance (prevent rust)
• Edge Retention (the higher this is the longer the blade will retain its sharpness)

No knife steel can be good at all of those categories so you need to choose.
The steel of my choice is named N690 and is a pretty good allrounder.

Across the steel one can see the wood for the knife handle. I chose ebony wood (really hard wood and difficult to handle, i think i will love it :D )

After you chose your materials you can proceed with drawing your knife on a normal sheet of paper (use original scaling for that). In Germany is a max of 4.72" allowed for fixed blades.

As you see on the next pic the next step is to transfer your drawing to thicker carton. The reason you do this is because you need to check if the knife scaling is perfet for your hand.

Then you cut it out to get you final stencil for transferring on the steel.
If you start with a metal saw and files you can go pretty fast to this stage of process.

After that you go further with a ton of sandpaper and patiennce but the result will be awesome =)
