What is spirituality?

'Just as a candle cannot burn without fire,
men cannot live without a spiritual life.'

~ Buddha.

Spirituality is a simple concept, which can be, and often is, made complicated by people, misunderstood, and is thus disregarded and labeled as just another dogma. In truth, spirituality is the complete opposite; it is an internal journey of realisation and exploration of life as it is.

What it is not - it can be but isn't limited to - is religion. There is often a misconception about the two; religion is a belief based on scripture and a central deity/deities, while spirituality is a boundless term for the search for the unity of all life, the connection to this unity, and to internal freedom. (I touch on this 'internal freedom' in my last 'Freedom Friday' post - link down below - and will dive deeper into it in next week's post.)

Spiritual-but-not-Religious.jpg

In the word spirituality, what is this 'spirit' that we talk about? It is what the Hindus call the 'atman', yet it extends out to the the concept of 'brahman'. Atman is the eternal self which each one of us 'is'. Brahman is the soul of the cosmos; the immortal state of the eternal all.

The body, with which we identify, is but a mere vehicle for consciousness - for the atman. This being the case, we begin to see that what we call the 'me', the 'I', is not the body. (This is a huge topic which I will discuss in great detail in the future.) The fundamental truth is that we don't exist - there is no 'me', no 'I'.

This is what Ramana Maharashi meant when he said,

'Who am I? Not the body, because it is decaying; not the mind, because the brain will decay with the body; not the personality, nor the emotions, for these also will vanish with death.'

Questioning and realising the true nature of what it is that we identify ourselves with is one of the first and most essential steps towards a connection to the truth of all. The thing to notice is that, although it may be called a spiritual 'journey', there is no goal to be reached here, nothing to attain or become; in truth, we already are, and in fact never can not be, the eternal spirit. All that stands in the way of us living this and not just thinking it are the illusions we create ourselves to take refuge in from the truth.

Spirituality is, as I mentioned earlier, boundless, so condensing its nature into an article like this would simply be doing it injustice, but what I have just touched upon here is the simplified version of fundamental understanding which drives people towards spirituality.

'Love is what we are; we don’t get it from somebody, we can’t give it to anybody, we can’t fall in it or fall out of it. Love is our true Being.'

~ Krishna Das.

Love is all there is. It is what we are. Yet there is a disconnection between what we are experiencing and what we are; this causes there to be a longing for something, most of us do not know what, in our hearts. It is like intuitively we know that there is something missing - out of balance. That something is love. Unconditional love that is.

We live on the surface of what we call love, longing for it yet using means of which nature is diametrically opposite in hopes of finding the happiness that we think we need to cure that ache in our hearts. We needn't look outside of ourselves, in fact, we don't even need to 'look'; it just is. Love is the 'is-ness' of our being - the spirit - and this longing for reconnecting with it is what spirituality is.

In next week's post, I will begin looking into different fields of spirituality.

Something to think on:

The body is just a vehicle for consciousness.

Wow! This article is pure gold!🧡🧡
Incredibly true when you mention that there is no goal or place to attain when one chooses to embark on a spiritual journey.

Do you know Ram Dass by curiosity? ^^ when you wrote “love is all there is” you reminded me of him ❤️

Thank you so much! 🕉 Yup, I know him well and love his work and all he has done and is doing. The energy around him and Krishna Das and many more really reflects the love of their guru Maharaj Ji; this love needs to be shared and spread.

Have you ever read his book 'Be Here Now'?

Many thanks once again! :)

OMG wow! You’re so knowledgeable 🤩 I love it!!! Didn’t expect it.
Thanks for asking☺️
It’s a shame I still to this day haven’t read Be Here Now because no librairies have it:(

This is silly but this is a passage of Ram Dass book on love I wrote down last year and have kept with me as I think it is filled with so much wisdom and purity 💗E6013F7B-F935-47DE-BB3C-F609781D23CE.png

Thank you! This kind of stuff is like food for my soul. I guess Buddha was right when he said men cannot live without spirituality!

I highly recommend it! I've skimmed through it numerous times in bookstores, mainly this one holistic shop in my town since it is a tough book to locate in bookstores, but I have only bought and read it recently. The opening of the book talks about Alpert's introduction into spirituality and the kind of life he went on to live, and this alone blew my mind! Try to get a copy, even by ordering it online or getting an ebook version; you won't regret it.

As for the note, it's such a nicely worded truth! I adore the notion of love being something inside of us, not something given to us. It really puts a spin on what love is and means to the commonman.

Thanks for the reply!

Namaste. 🕉🍄

Wow that is very cool that you have read it recently 😍 I know it is on amazon as well. I want to have my own copy one day for sure. Anything that Ram Dass has written is too precious not to go back to it🌟 I wish badly I could visit him in Hawaï.

You said it so well:) it’s food for the soul 💗 I don’t ever want to go back to a life in which spirituality wasn’t there.

Thanks to you for sharing such wise insights and content 🧡🌟🖤💜💚

Ram Das is a light onto the world. Thank you for also sharing!

Namaste. 🕉🍄

Spiritual Saturday!!! What an awesome idea! Have you heard of #mindfullife or #mindfulmonday... you might meet some like minded folk there! Love Ram Dass... such wisdom.

Discord 🧘About

Thank you! I have not heard of them, but I'll give them a look now. I don't have a discord, but I will set one up tomorrow.

Once again, thank you.

Namaste.

You are welcome. Discord adds a whole new dimension to the steem experience. We've been having group meditations twice a week - I can only make one because of the time difference, but it's nice to share a meditation space together.

It sounds like a really cool idea! I will surely check it out so!

What a wonderful post! I live in the Southern part of the United States where religion is in abundance, but spirituality is often lacking. I've felt that way for a while--I don't consider myself religious, but I do try to connect with my spiritual side. I am really looking forward to reading more of what you have to share on the topic as I still have much to learn!

Thank you! It is always hard in those circumstances, so staying strong, doing the work, learning and growing is key.

More articles are on their way.

Thank you, see you again!

Namaste.

Well said!
Thank-you for stating this with such clarity and understanding! Hopefully it will bring more clarity and understanding to others!

Thank you! I hope whoever stumbles upon this is able to get something out of it.

Wow....Thank you. It would be really great to have you on the mindful life community - to learn, share and meditate 🧘🏼‍♂️🧘🏼‍♀️. Look forward to know you more on Discord 😊
