Devon's 2018 Pinewood Derby Win
Last night we had a blast at Devon's Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. If you're not familiar with what a Pinewood Derby is, check the wikipedia page. It's been running since 1953!
You start with a kit like this:

Then you build a car which has to be 5.0 ounces or less.
We had a great time and Devon ended up winning within his Bear Den and got 4th overall for his pack 600. That means he gets to compete again in April in the districts.
He had a blast. :) The girls had fun also as we built cars for them to compete in the "outlaw" division for non-scouts which has no restrictions on the cars.

I covered my first pinewood derby car in fake fur and made it look like a squirrel. Wasn't very aerodynamic, but it was mine and weird and I loved it! It's one of my favorite memories from childhood.
Hahah! That's awesome. A furry racer. I love how memories like that from our childhood stick out. Thanks for sharing. :)
wow! I didn't know about this derby! I think I will adopt this competition for my children's school! I found it very funny in all aspects from the construction workshop, design "plate and paint" haha sure it has been fun for the whole family! I already visualized my own wooden lambo hahaha
congrats to your pinewood master!
Wooden Lambo's all around! Hahah.
I loved being in the Cub Scouts as a kid and have fond memories of the Pinewood Derby. @themanwithnoname summed it up pretty well, the time spent with my step-dad making it was the best. And tbh, he and I weren't very close, so it is one of the few memories I have of us actually doing something together.
Devon looks so proud, that is awesome!
1973 Wanalancit council PineWood derby champion here....Dad let me sand the body but he did everything else: diamond paste polishing of the axels, +/- .0001 roundness on the wheels, precision alignment jigs, & +/- .01 oz on the weight. I was not allowed to touch it before the competition. Serious business between the engineering dads, but fun anyway....
I did Pinewood derby back in the day! That was so much fun. What I actually liked the most was getting to spend time working on the cars with my dad. Pretty much all of my cars were the same, but I still liked getting to make them with him. You and Devon probably got to make some great memories on this one too!
Yeah, the last two years our cars didn't do all that well. This year I was careful to make sure we came in at exatctly 5.0 ounces and we used some graphite lubricant right before the race which I think helped a lot. I built all three cars in two meetings we had set aside for that purpose during our regular scout meet ups. The girls had fun too. Good memories indeed. :)
Love that!
You can tell he knew it was going to be close - checking the scoreboard on the 5th run closely!
Congratulations all!
Awesome to have those proud moments with our children!
Helps to make a #healthy-home!!
Peace
Without a doubt, this is great family time for some fun and bonding. You are really a great father who participates actively in your children activities like building a car from a block of wood. In this modern and stressful society, we are all too occupied with our overloaded piles of work with different deadlines to meet daily. Taking time off to spend with family is something not everyone is capable of doing and I am also one of the guilty father of two. This article does act as a reminder of the importance of family time. Have been following and upvoting your articles for some time but I believe this is the first time I made a comment on your article. Thanks for posting and keep doing your great job as your father and a guide in steemit platform.
Is that your kid?
He's already coming first, a star in the making
Congratulation dear lukestokes
