Flags of the World #14: Bangladesh!

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

Hello fellow Steemians and welcome to my review of the Bangladeshi flag! This is the 14th flag that I will be covering in my series to cover most of the flags of the world! This flag is pretty similar to another, way more popular Asian flag, but trust me that is all they have in common!

Today's Flag is the Flag of Bangladesh!

The flag of Bangladesh is pretty simple, it consist of a green background with a red disc on top of it, the red disc is slightly shifted towards the hoist side of the flag (left side). The flag was adopted during the Bangladeshi liberation war on the 17th of January, 1972. The flag was designed by a group of students from Dhaka University (Dhaka is Bangladesh's capital). The original flag was made from scraps of clothes that where donated by a store from the Dhaka Market.

Meanings

The green color stands for the lush vegetation that covers all of Bangladesh and its also used to represent Islam, the majority religion of the country.

The red color represent the sun rising over Bengal (i lied, they do have a lot in common don't they?) and the blood of those who died fighting for the independence of Bangladesh and the sacrifices of the martyrs who struggled in the war.

Other Flags!

Bangladesh is a relatively new country, so it really has not had many flags in its short story but there are some worth mentioning.

This was the original flag of Bangladesh, it added the borders of the country in golden to the middle of the red circle, but since the flags where made by hand during the war, they all looked different because it was pretty hard to sew the borders on the country, so they decided to just remove it! (just remove it! problem gone! I wish life was as easy as that!)

Facts

  • Bangladesh has some of the most fertile land in the world, thanks to this most of the people in the country are farmers.

  • The legacy of British colonization still remains in the country, Cricket is the most popular sport all around in the country!

  • The left hand in Bangladesh is considered dirty so they usually only use their right hands for shaking hands, eating or handing things to other people.

Cricket as the most popular sport is really surprising! Keep up the good work with the flags, the letter C is next on the list and I can't wait for Croatian flag to be covered :)

I'll make sure to give special treatment to the Croatian flag :-D

This was an interesting post!! The first flag definitely gives the vibe of an 'army' and includes that element of 'fighting.' It's cool to know the origin of the flags - and definitely, the current flag is much easier to draw without the borders. The meaning of colours really connect the first flag to the current one - the blood shed by the warriors to liberate the lush green country. Extremely interesting post! I am looking forward to read more :)

interesting facts about the flags!! i hope you make one article about the venezuela flag!! i would love it

It will come eventually!

I never knew that about these facts. Well, the British colonisation I knew about, but not that they were all farmers. Really interesting. Thanks for sharing.
