In God’s House Always

Psalms 61:4 (KJV)
I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.

Some Bible preachers make great distinctions between the Tabernacle, the court of the Temple and the Temple, assigning to each one a particular place in the New Testament Christian experience
The court is the church in their teaching
The Temple is our individual soul
The tabernacle I suppose they would assign to our physical bodies

Such teaching stretches what is allowed in typology a bit too far for my liking. I see each of the three as synonymous and as a type of the New Testament house of God, the local church.

With that in mind notice that The Psalmist, David, said he would abide in God’s tabernacle for ever. I have no difficulty seeing this as his confidence in eternal life. I also believe it represents his heart’s dwelling while alive on earth. Though it cannot be said he never left the place of worship physically, it may be said he never left it in spirit.

Now learn a lesson. Even as David could not have lived never leaving the place of worship neither can we. We have to work; we have to provide for our families. We have to reach out in Christian love for the lost. But, while our bodies necessarily must remove from God’s house from time to time, our spirit, our heart, our love need never.[1] This is true in every earthly scenario when we hold church services at scheduled times. It is equally true today when government entities and world opinion request that we do not assemble.

Our bodies may not freely assemble. That need never prevent our spirits.

[1] 1 Corinthians 5:3 (KJV)
For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
