Til These Calamities are Passed

Psalms 57:1 (KJV)
Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

Seldom has this generation of Christians (for that matter, Americans in general) experienced a calamity of such magnitude that they must hide from it. It is against our nature, but it is not unprecedented in our history, pre or post the War for Independence.
Martin Luther wrestled with how to perform ministry during the Black Plague
Richard Baxter faced a pestilence in England in the 1600s
1917 saw the Spanish Flu in the US.
Polio was as recent as my parents

Polio, if it were not for vaccinations, would still be a killer in our country. It still exists, controlled only through vaccination. I just heard about the Amish, who were exempted from the vaccine for religious reasons, but live in relative isolation, a drawbridge separating them from the rest of the world.

My whole generation was vaccinated without an argument. I remember well the long lines at school where we received injection after injection. It was mandatory. Our parents would not have considered questioning it. It is, for all practical purposes, the reason we live with so little fear of death by disease today.

But now a generation exists who, at the same time, resist vaccinations and fear germs. It’s just not going to work that way. When pestilence comes, we must quarantine the ill and the vulnerable. We ought to wisely practice vaccination. And then we ought to live without fear in the shadow of God’s wings.

What ought we to do while we await the passing of this calamity?
*We ought to shelter under the wings of God
We ought to practice prayer as we have never before and
We ought to engage in His Word

This is a time to learn to wait on God. He will reveal Himself if we will but trust Him.
