ACHIEVEMENT3 CONTENT ETIQUETTE BY@madugift
Hello steemian , I trust you have had a fruitful week , Happy New month to you all.
Please stay with me as I write on plagiarism.
I understand plagiarism as the presenting , incorporating , taking or converting someone else's work , literary or non literary as one's own , or lifting parts of another person's work without proper referencing. Plagiarism is wrong morally and illegal by law. In plagiarism the plagiarizer gains and credit is not given to the original owner/writer.
Acts of plagiarism is now becoming prevalent in our society today, people like taking credit for works that are not theirs. Even in research's and the education sector people plagiarise due to different reasons.
Types of plagiarism
There are lots of types of plagiarism of which I will talk about a few of them.
Direct plagiarism
This is the copying of a part or section of another person's work word for word without proper citation or reference , This type of plagiarism is rampant amongst students.
Mosiac plagiarism.
This is the presentation of a work which comprised of an inter related plagiarised content of different authors. It is basically copy sections of works of different authors and arranging them in a way that it would seem like you are the original owner of the ideas in the piece of work .
This type of plagiarism is not easy to detect.
Self plagiarism
In this type of plagiarism one presents his previous work in a new project or work without proper citing of his previous work. It's a way of passing one's previous work as a recent one .
Accidental plagiarism
This type of plagiarism involves copying or presenting someone's work unintentionally or mistakingly.
It could result from failing to cite sources to making mistakes in citing sources .
Effects of plagiarism
Plagiarism murders creativity , people not having confidence in themselves tend to plagiarise to be able to meet up, to them it seems as a means to an end after plagiarising successfully without being caught , it becomes a part of them as a result their innate creativity is pushed aside.
Plagiarism is a very dishonest behavior that is detrimental to the person plagiarising , because when the person is caught the person would face stringent consequences of plagiarism.
Plagiarism defeats the purpose of scholarly endeavors in that it destroys academic trust and integrity , it destroys the major purpose of a given assignment or research because the students are supposed to be able tackle such problems on their own and if they receive ideas from works of others they should cite it to show that the idea did not come from them.
Tips to avoiding plagiarism
Start early
Procrastination has made many people plagiarise because they cannot be able to do the work they wanted to do as a result of spending time on other things this would make them copy other people's work or content in other to meet up with the time spent.
Have confidence in your work
Lack of confidence has mad many people plagiarise because they feel their work is not good enough not knowing that everyone has a different style or way of expressing themselves which comes down to creativity as result they copy other people's work .
Cite your sources
This is a major cause of plagiarism , failure to cite sources results in a plagiarised work.
Always keep a note of your sources this will help you keep track of your sources and in turn help you cite them properly ,
these includes photos too.
Use quotation marks to indicate sentences, phrases or paragraphs that are not your original ideas.
Use your original ideas
Always check your work with a plagiarism checker.
Conclusion
Plagiarism is a very wrong and dishonest act that is frowned upon everywhere in the world . Plagiarism kills creativity, fosters academic dishonesty and should be avoided by all.
Culprits of plagiarism are sanctioned and I don't think anyone wants to be sanctioned and labelled a dishonest person.
No one should engage in acts of plagiarism and if one has already engaged In the act they should desist from such acts.
Here is an example of a citation
In most of the cases, people shrug off their shoulders by taking plagiarism too lightly. A common perception of plagiarism is ‘copying another's work or borrowing someone else's original ideas'.
