Unforgettable Italy Week 22 -Arco di Costantino- @maitt87

in Italy3 years ago

Greetings friends of the Italy community! Here I am very happy to share with you one more week of the Unforgettable Italy initiative, which masterfully leads our friend @girolamomarotta and in which he invites us week after week to share unique photos that take us to travel through the always beautiful Italy.

This time I show you this picture of the Arch of Constantine, a monument that is located in the city of Rome, delimiting the Colosseum of Rome and the Roman Forum. Actually, there are three arches that make it up, the main one is located in the center and is 11.5 meters high. It was erected in 315 on the occasion of Constantine's victory over Maxentius. It is 21 meters high, which makes it the largest arch in Rome and was made from pieces of previous buildings.

The Arch of Constantine features Flavius columns, sculptures of Trajan and Hadrian tondos, as well as reliefs from his own time. All styles of reliefs are on display in this single monument. The Arch of Constantine is one of the best preserved monuments of Ancient Rome and thanks to its excellent location is one of the most photographed and representative points of the city.

The reason why the Arch is so well preserved is due to the fact that during the Middle Ages it was moved, stone by stone, to the fortress of an aristocratic family of the city. It remained in the domain of this dynasty until, after a meticulous restoration, it was returned to its place of origin in 1804. It is really impressive to see how imposing the arch looks in the middle of the city and it was one of the things that caught my attention when I was visiting the place.
