That title is definitely not the most accurate for this post, but never mind, I will be dropping a question, and you are likely going to have the answer as wrong as the title I gave this post, or worse. Here is the question.

What is the rabbit's favourite food?

Now, let me give you options to help make you fail it smoothly.

(A). hay
(B). Carrots
(C). Insects
(D). Eggs

If you are roughly my age, you will get the answer wrong by selecting option B for carrots. I would pick Carrot because I spent all my childhood, time and again watching a cartoon character called Bugs Bunny eating carrots. And that will make me easily assume that rabbits eat carrots and that they love it.

But that is wrong.

A rabbit in the wild will not really feed on carrots, they will spend most of their time having hay in their menu.

"The rabbit eats carrot misconception" started with a 1934 film titled "It happened one night", starring Clark Gable. In one of the iconic scene, the lead actor was eating a carrot and speed-talking which quickly became a meme. And when Animator Bob Clampett created Bugs Bunny, he modelled it around the meme, gave the bunny a carrot as his signature snack and made it speak so fast.

The Bugs Bunny show became popular and so was the wrong impression that rabbits love carrots. A whole generation carried this misconception, and it became so pervasive that stuffed rabbits today comes with a stuffed carrot, reinforcing the Bugs Bunny eating carrots we grew up with.

A vet is most likely to tell you that too much carrots is not good for your rabbit and when you get a rabbit for a pet, you would likely be warned not to feed it carrots.

Conclusion

So, next time you see a bunny, don't offer 'em a carrot – bring on the hay instead! Try not to equate rabbits with carrots. And here's a strong takeaway: popular opinion isn't always right. A widely accepted idea can be rooted deep in misconception.
