Wayland's Smithy - A Blacksmith for all Occasions! Oxfordshire, UK

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Walking along the Ridgeway, an ancient road along the Berkshire Downs, you arrive at Wayland's Smithy, a beautifully situated Neolithic chambered long barrow.

It is located a mile from the famous Uffington White Horse, and legend has it that it is the home of Wayland, the Saxon god of metal working.

Tradition says, 'At this place lived formerly an invisible Smith, and if a traveller's Horse had lost a Shoe upon the road, he had no more to do than to bring the Horse to this place with a piece of money, and leaving both there for some little time, he might come again and find the money gone, but the Horse new shod.'

There was an initial burial place on the site from 3590 BCE holding remains of 14 people. The current long barrow and chambered tomb was built in 3460 BCE on top and is 185 feet (56 m) long and 43 feet (13 m) wide at the south end!
