Facebook not censored? That sounds like a bad joke...

If you ask me one of the nice things of steemit is the point, that you can't censor because of the blockchain, no matter if it is a ponzi scheme or not. I would say with buying into STEEM you simply buy into the steemit system and everything related to it. It could be seen like shares. If the value of steemit raises, people will go to buy STEEM on the markets raising its price.

compare the comments on steemit to youtube... steemit's comments are typically cringeworthy.

Why?

Because it's the big swinging dicks on here that censor... go and insult a big player on here - you'll get smashed into the ground by a downvote @100% ... it happened to me, it'll happen to many more. It's the biggest display of cringe worthy ass licking I've ever seen

My account is quite new and I haven't experienced any bad things so far. Steemit is a very young platform (still beta) so I think it has potential to grow. Besides saying that insulting is not a nice thing I can understand your point of using downvoting as a way of censorship. Hard to say, but I actually like the idea of steemit. The potential to grow to something where people can create their own communities and getting rewarded for it sound nice for me in points of quality, which should enhance in my eyes. That could be huge value to the society. On the other side I think Steemit will go through a lot of changes in the future so there is chance to enhance.

Well I hope you're right that it will produce good communities... And I agree that there will be many enhancement opportunities. Let's hope they use them.

I'm just not sure that good quality content will be appreciated. The incentives I feel are a bit skewed. People come on here to "work". The readers / consumers are upvoting strategically. If they weren't, they'd be on instagram, youtube or medium, where the quality is much much better.

At some point in this alt coin bubble, you need to ask yourself "does that really need blockchain technology?". I would argue (ironically, apart from the censorship debate), that the answer to that is no.

Yeah I get you point. For sure a lot of problems to solve.
I think censorship becomes more and more a problem on social networks like Facebook f.e. . I have seen myself posts or even whole accounts being censored or banned for ridiculous reasons. Giving the feeling that critical posts are held back.

Institutions f.e. here in Germany were built up with the sole purpose to censor / ban critical posts. This is actually a fact.

Even though one would say this is not happening there is a huge risk that it could happen with conventional social media technology. Blockchain technology actually makes censorship impossible. If steemit would start to censor things, anybody in the world could make those hidden entries visible through simply connecting to the blockchain. This is a huge benefit of this technology in my eyes.

Yeah actually I saw a video news piece on the bbc a while ago showing how Germany is literally sifting through loads of flagged content on youtube etc... because various things are not allowed to be joked about. Coming from the UK, that for me is madness!!

I agree that the blockchain can solve that problem and steemit should be at the forefront of that mission but I think it's not delivering on that promise at the moment.

I'm gona post some ideas on how I think we could improve that aspect of steemit shortly...

Thanks for the feedback, and I'll check out those posts too

Hey there, you are welcome. Try to imagine that the info about Germany you have is about 4-5 years old I would say. Don't get me wrong but today we have almost "George Orwell knocking at our door time", if you get my point. So in my eyes censorship is a real concern for me.

I am totally with you regarding the problems with the platform although my account is quite new, so my insight is quite fresh I would say...

Anyways, I like the fact, that we had a nice conversation on this and in general I think this topic is not an uninteresting one.

Waiting for your posts...

Cheers!
