The enormous growth of data centers due, among other causes, to the exaggerated demand for artificial intelligence applications or cryptocurrencies, requires more and more energy and not all of it is renewable, which is why alarm voices are already beginning to be heard from of the staunchest defenders of environmental sustainability.

El enorme crecimiento de los centros de datos debido entre otras causas, a la exagerada demanda de aplicaciones de inteligencia artificial o las criptomonedas, necesita cada vez más energía y no toda ella es renovable, por lo que ya empiezan a oírse voces de alarma por parte de los defensores más acérrimos de la sostenibilidad del medio ambiente.

There are already several companies, both bitcoin mining and large data centers, that have moved their facilities to geographical areas where it is profitable to use geothermal energy to cover their needs, affecting the rest of humanity as little as possible, but this type of energy at the moment can only be obtained in very specific places.

Ya son varias las empresas tanto de minería de bitcoin como grandes centros de datos que han movido sus instalaciones a zonas geográficas donde resulta rentable utilizar la energía geotérmica para cubrir sus necesidades afectando lo menos posible al resto de la humanidad, pero este tipo de energía por el momento se puede obtener tan solo en lugares muy concretos.

As you all know, geothermal energy is obtained by taking advantage of the heat from the interior of the Earth that is transmitted through rock bodies. This heats the underground water currents, making it rise as hot water or in the form of steam that we can use to generate electricity.

Como todos sabéis la energía geotérmica​ es la que se obtiene mediante el aprovechamiento del calor del interior de la Tierra que se transmite a través de los cuerpos de roca, esto calienta las corrientes de agua subterránea haciéndola ascender como agua caliente o en forma de vapor que podemos utilizar para generar electricidad.

Now Google has developed a method to produce geothermal energy in dry places that it is testing in a desert area in northern Nevada (USA). Given the absence of groundwater in the subsoil of this arid area, Google's idea is to drill two wells with a depth of more than two kilometers each.

Ahora Google ha desarrollado un método para producir energía geotérmica en lugares secos que está probando en una zona desértica del norte de Nevada (USA), ante la ausencia de agua subterránea en el subsuelo de esta zona tan árida la idea de Google consiste en perforar dos pozos con una profundidad de más de dos kilómetros cada uno.

Once the wells have been drilled, they are joined together by hydraulic fracturing, generating fractures in the rock that end up connecting both wells. Cold water is introduced through one of the wells and then emerges through the other well with a temperature high enough to activate the turbines and produce energy.

Una vez perforados los pozos se unen entre sí mediante fracturación hidráulica, generando fracturas en la roca que terminan conectando ambos pozos, por uno de ellos pozos se introduce agua fría que emerge a continuación por el otro pozo con una temperatura suficientemente alta para activar las turbinas y producir energía.

According to the construction company, the temperatures at the bottom of the wells exceeded 190 degrees Celsius and enough water was moved to obtain around 3.5 megawatts of electricity. In addition, this geothermal plant is located near another conventional geothermal plant, which will allow the existing infrastructure to be used to connect it to the network.

Según la empresa constructora las temperaturas en el fondo de los pozos alcanzaron superaron los 190 grados centígrados y se movió suficiente agua para obtener alrededor de 3.5 megavatios de electricidad, además esta central geotérmica está ubicada cerca de otra central geotérmica convencional lo que permitirá aprovechar las infraestructuras existentes para conectarla a la red.
