Almost a century ago, experts believed that our galaxy was all there was in the universe apart from some "nebula", but at the end of the 1920s Edwin Hubble, who, as I always say, before being a telescope was a Sir, he realized those nebulae were nothing more than large galaxies like ours all of them full of stars.

Hace casi un siglo los expertos creían que nuestra galaxia era todo lo que había en el universo aparte de alguna "nebulosa", pero a finales de los años veinte del siglo pasado Edwin Hubble que, como siempre digo, antes de ser un telescopio era un señor, se dio cuenta de esas nebulosas no eran otra cosa que grandes galaxias como la nuestra repletas de estrellas.

But Hubble not only demonstrated that the universe was immensely larger than suspected, while calculating the distances to the new galaxies discovered, he realized that the universe was also expanding and that even the more distant a galaxy was, the faster it moved away of us.

Pero Hubble no solo demostró que el universo era inmensamente mayor de lo que se sospechaba, mientras calculaba las distancias a las nuevas galaxias descubiertas se dio cuenta de que además el universo se estaba expandiendo y que incluso cuanto más lejana era una galaxia más rápido se alejaba de nosotros.

With a simple reasoning they realized that if it is expanding it means that it was smaller before and they considered "rewinding" the video of the expansion and from there the Big Bang theory arises, which states that the universe originated from a "big bang" that would explain the reason why the universe expands.

Con un simple razonamiento se dieron cuenta de que si se está expandiendo es que antes era más pequeño y se plantearon "rebobinar" el video de la expansión y de hay surge la teoría del Big Bang, que plantea que el universo se originó a partir de una "gran explosión" que explicaría la razón por la cual el universo se expande.

It also seems logical to think that, if the reason for the expansion is the force of the explosion, it should slow down over time, but research carried out at the end of the last century showed that not only is the expansion not slowing down, but it is accelerating and from there scientists deduce the existence of a force that "stretches" space-time, which they called dark energy.

Parece lógico pensar también que, si la razón de la expansión es la fuerza de la explosión, ésta debería ir frenándose con el tiempo, pero investigaciones realizadas a finales del siglo pasado mostraron que no solo la expansión no se frena sino que se está acelerando y de ahí los científicos deducen la existencia una fuerza que "estira" el espacio tiempo a la que llamaron energía oscura.

But now a device called Dark Energy Spectroscopic (DESI) whose task is to carry out observations of galaxies through spectroscopy, to study the expansion of the universe and create the best three-dimensional map that we currently have of the universe, has shown data that seem to contradict this idea.

Pero ahora un dispositivo denominado Espectroscópico de Energía Oscura (DESI) cuyo cometido es realizar observaciones de galaxias mediante espectroscopia, para estudiar la expansión del universo y crear el mejor mapa en tres dimensiones que tenemos actualmente del universo, ha mostrado unos datos que parecen contradecir esta idea.

After observing more than six billion galaxies spread over eleven billion light years, DESI has found some differences that indicate that the universe may have slowed down in the last billion years. This discovery doesn't matter to us but for all those who dedicate themselves to its study it is a total paradigm shift.

Después de observar más de seis mil millones de galaxias repartidas en once mil millones de años luz, DESI ha encontrado algunas diferencias que indican que el universo puede haberse desacelerado en los últimos mil millones de años. Este descubrimiento a nosotros nos da un poco igual pero para todos los que se dedican a su estudio es un cambio total de paradigma.
