Fukuoka, the largest city on Kyushu, the most southern of the main islands of Japan, was a mystery to me for a long time. On my travels, I met very nice people from Fukuoka, but the city was always too far to go there, and somehow I could not connect with that place.

I was all the more excited and full of anticipation when some time ago I found myself in the southernmost metropolis of Japan. My visit was part of a larger trip, towards the cherry blossom and the adventure, and wherever we stopped, we were not disappointed at all. Japan has something to offer all around, even after a long time here in the country, there are still many corners and facets to discover.

We just came from Nagasaki and already had a few great days behind us and now we were ready for Fukuoka. We were prepared to discover the biggest city on Kyushu and especially I was really in the mood. Fukuoka has the reputation of a cultural metropolis, the proximity to Korea and other Asian countries has probably had a special influence on this. In terms of population, Fukuoka now ranks sixth in the country and is not only the youngest, but also the fastest growing major city in Japan. It's a vibrant powerhouse, which was already noticeable at the main Hub Hakata Station.

Transfer stations in metropolises are usually a small town unto themselves, with different rail operators meeting here with their lines. Suburban, metro and long-distance trains, and of course the Kyushu Shinkansen, ensure that crowds of people stream in and out here all day long. And if that weren't enough, there's also a department store and a wide variety of stores, as in every proper Japanese hub station, and also the gastronomic business is well represented here.

But apart from the station, there is of course plenty to see, and today's article is intended as a small introduction. A small selection of pictures of our first day, in the spring in the best T-shirt weather, when we went in search of the cherry blossom. And we found them, but more about that another time. Today is going to be a first little approach to an interesting city...

Fukuoka, die größte Stadt auf Kyushu, der südlichsten Hauptinsel Japans war für mich lange ein Mysterium. Auf meinen Reisen waren mir zwar vorher auch bereits sehr sympathische Menschen aus Fukuoka begegnet, aber die Stadt war lange einfach immer zu weit, um von mir angesteuert zu werden, und irgendwie konnte ich mit der Stadt einfach nichts anfangen.

Umso aufgeregter und voller Vorfreude war ich dann, als es mich vor einiger Zeit doch in die südlichste Metropole Japans verschlagen hatte. Mein Besuch war Teil einer größeren Reise, der Kirschblüte und dem Abenteuer entgegen, und wir wurden, wo immer wir auch aufschlugen, keinesfalls enttäuscht. Japan hat überall etwas zu bieten, auch nach längerer Zeit hier im Lande gibt es noch viele Ecken und Facetten zu entdecken und kennenzulernen.

Wir kamen gerade aus Nagasaki und hatten bereits ein paar tolle Tage hinter uns und jetzt also Fukuoka. Wir waren bereit, für uns auch die größe Stadt auf Kyushu zu entdecken und besonders ich hatte richtig Lust auf die Stadt. Fukuoka hat den Ruf einer Kulturmetrople, die Nähe zu Korea und anderen asiatischen Ländern hat hier wohl auch einen besonderen Einfluß hierauf gehabt. In Sachen Einwohner rangiert Fukuoka jetzt an sechster Stelle im Land und ist nicht nur die jüngste, sondern auch die am schnellsten wachsende Großstadt Japans. Ein pulsierendes Powerhouse, was sich bereits am Hauptbahnhof Hakata-Station bemerkt machte.

Umsteigebahnhöfe in Metropolen sind meist eine Kleinstadt für sich selbst, verschieden Bahn-Betreiber treffen hier mit ihren Linien aufeinander. S-, U- und Fernbahn, und natürlich auch der Kyushu Shinkansen sorgen dafür, dass hier den ganzen Tag die Menschenmassen rein- und rauströmen. Und wenn das nicht schon genug wäre, gibt es wie in einem ordentlichen japanischen Hub-Bahnhof auch noch ein Kaufhaus und die verschiedensten Läden, vor allem das gastronomische Business ist hier standesgemäss vertreten.

Aber außer Bahnhof gibt es selbstverständlich noch genug zu sehen, und der heutige Beitrag soll eine kleine Einstimmung sein. Eine kleine Bilderauswahl unseres ersten Tages, im Frühling bei bestem T-Shirt-Wetter haben wir uns auf die Suche nach der Kirschblüte gemacht. Und sie auch gefunden, aber davon gibt es ein anderes Mal mehr. Heute erst mal eine kleine Annäherung an eine interessante Stadt...

Temples are an essential part of Japan, and if they have a five-story pagoda to offer, I look even more closely. Some of them are located directly in the city center and offer a fascinating contrast to the hustle and bustle of the surroundings.

Tempel gehören in Japan einfach dazu, und wenn sie dann noch einen fünfstöckige Pagode zu bieten haben, schaut man doch gleich noch einmal viel genauer hin. Teilweise direkt in der Innenstadt gelegen, bieten sie meist einen faszinierenden Kontrast zu wuseligen Umgebung.

A first blooming cherry tree immediately lifted our spirits a bit more and showed that we had come to the right place (or town) at the right time.

Ein erster blühenden Kirschbaum hat unsere Stimmung gleich noch etwas angehoben und gezeigt, dass wir dann doch zur richtigen Zeit an den richtigen Ort (oder die richtige Stadt) gekommen sind.

Unfortunately I can't show you the big Fukuoka Buddha, the over 16 meters high statue could only be visited inside without camera and for this reason just have this picture here. The visit also includes a room in total darkness, so that you should probably find yourself here first. Well, that's Buddhism.

Der große Fukuoka-Buddha muss leider diesem Blog fernbleiben, die über 16 Meter hohe Statue war im Inneren nur ohne Kamera zu besichtigen und aus diesem Grund begnügen wir uns mit diesem Bild. Die Besichtigung beinhaltet auch einen Raum in totaler Dunkelheit, damit man hier wohl sich erst einmal selber finden soll. Buddhismus halt.

A memorial plaque to Shoichi Kokushi, who in 1241 brought the recipes for udon and soba noodles from China to Japan and helped to spread and popularize these dishes, which are so important in Japan today. As a "checker" of Japanese cuisine, there's only one thing I can say: "Good job!"

Eine Gedenktafel für Shoichi Kokushi, welcher in 1241 unter anderem die Rezepte für Udon und Soba Nudeln von China nach Japan mitbrachte und half diese heute in Japan so wichtigen Speisen zu verbreiten und populär zu machen. Als "Checker" der japanischen Küche kann ich da nur eins sagen: "Gute Arbeit!"

Fukuoka combines new and old, like most metropolises in Japan, but at first glance seems more compact and modern than other cities. Our first excursion took us out of the city center to a larger park next to the former castle complex, of which, unfortunately, only some foundation walls remain. But even those managed to enchant us Japan-wise. Especially in spring with myriads of cherry blossoms on all sides.

Fukuoka vereint neu und alt, wie die meisten Metropolen Japans, wirkt aber aber den ersten Blick kompakter und moderner als andere Städte. Unser erster Ausflug führte uns aus der Innenstadt in einen größeren Park neben der früheren Burganlage, von der leider nur noch einige Grundmauern übrig geblieben sind. Aber selbst die haben es geschafft, uns japanmäßig zu verzaubern. Insbesondere im Frühling mit Myriaden von Kirschblüten zu allen Seiten.

Unser erster kleiner Ausflug nach Fukuoka soll hier enden, aber da wir der Kirschblüte auf der Spur sind, soll es beim nächsten Mal etwas genauer zur Sache gehen. Um nichts zu verpassen, schaltet lieber nicht um, sondern bleibt nur dran an diesem Kanal. Fukuoka hat und wird nicht enttäuschen.
