i've come to believe that past civilizations did that. that is not 'natural' in the sense that rain/wind/waves did that. waves, wind and rain create smooth surfaces, without such ridges. more likely is old quarry.
in fact my mind imagines some of those people that did this are still here and pretend that just happened by chance. pure conjecture, but seems possible, given that its actually origins seem to have been overlooked for so long.
