Welcome to the "Fiesta de las Migas" in Torrox!

We´ve been living here in Torrox for over two decades now during the winter season and we seldom attend the festivities. We love the town and the beaches and we´ve made friends with the locals. Yesterday, I decided to see what they were up to in this year`s celebration of the Fiesta de las Migas. The event began at 11:00 AM and all those who came were directed to the distribution area where Migas were cooked live in front of the visitors. And so let me share with you this festival in the town of Torrox, Andalusia.

The event makers couldn´t be more happier since the weather was on their side...indeed, they were lucky with the weather because prior to this event it rained three straight days and fogs were all around the town. I was lucky too since I planned to attend the event the week before.

They celebrate this fiesta annually on the Sunday before Christmas... to pay tribute to a dish called Migas. It´s a very simple dish that could make you full with just eating it with tomato salad and olives. The town center was car free and all visitors from other towns were brought by buses to the pueblo.

All the roads to the town center were closed so I had to park the car and walked about one kilometer to the designated area of the event. We live in another valley behind these hills.

They used the town´s parking lot to cook the Migas on site.. there were stalls that sell specialties like various kinds of chorizos, cheeses, bread, sweets, nuts, oil, honey, and of course wine. Torrox is part of the Axarquia Region where wines are grown. But TBH, I can´t drink the wine they served in the fiesta that was locally produced. It was simply very very sweet for my taste.

The stalls sold various products coming from different regions of Andalucia. It is also a free day to try samples of wines being sold by local farmers.

The Migas Distribution Line

You can see the fence in the image below that separated the distribution counter and the line of the visitors and behind those counters is the area where Migas were cooked. I did not join in the line since I also cook Migas at home. I have tasted the wine tho and as I said....very sweet!

The Migas cooks and helpers were either employees at the town hall or local volunteers in and around Torrox. They were well organized and each cook had his own huge pan with all the ingredients available behind him including the woods to be used for cooking.

This young man here was prepping his huge pan for Migas cooking. You can see his ingredients behind him and look at those liters of olive oil standing on the side!

MIGAS Background

Migas is a dish made of breadcrumbs that were fried in olive oil with garlic. In today´s celebration, this dish were given for free with salad + local wine to all visitors who wish to try them. The story behind the Migas hype was that, farm laborers who work in the vineyard and olive groves were given this food as their lunch by their landlord. Migas is actually a heavy meal if you eat plenty of them. But with a good wine that goes with it, somehow it is a good combination and one could feel satisfaction in the meal being served.

The visitors were patient enough to fall in line and waited for their turn to get their plates filled at the counter.

It is like a big picnic day where everyone sat on the grass to enjoy their free meal.

Where Visitors Celebrated The Event

Some locals who had visitors that came and celebrate the event with them did not wait for the free meal. Instead, they brought their visitors to local bars or bodegas where they can enjoy tapas and dine outside the plaza.

The wine bar where you can taste and buy the wine you like.

Later on after the Migas lunch, there had been a live show .. I went to see the stage which was being prepared.. I didn´t wait for the live band playing since I left the fiesta when I was done with my cake shopping and the photography.

The Torrox Church just behind the Town Hall

Before I left the festivities, there were still lots of visitors coming in and the Migas line was still long. I slowly walked towards the car and drove back to our valley. The purpose of the Migas fiesta is to promote tourism in the town, after all, Torrox has the patent for the slogan that says..... TORROX, MEJOR CLIMA DE EUROPA! (Torrox, The Best Climate In Europe!)

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!
