Hacking Happiness -- Learning how to break down the key components to sustainable well being

in #life5 years ago

Welcome to Dr. Pranceus's Imaginarium!

Today we will be talking about health!

The general theme of this blog is self improvement.
I want to take a bit of time to dissect some of the components of general health that I feel others may not be privy to.

We all want to be happy

Whether we acknowledge it or not, most of our time is spent chasing desires and satisfying cravings.
We are creatures of habit and mostly want to just experience pleasure and avoid pain ...
that's wonderful! ...

Now how do we do it well??

In this post we are going to assume that you are not dealing w/ chronic pain (mental, emotional or physical).
Essentially what we want to do is learn more about how our brains and bodies work so we can make choices that help us feel how we want to ... happy, optimistic and excited!

You can create any kind of mental/emotional state that you want but this is where I will start.

Happiness

What is happiness?

noun
the state of being happy.

The definition doesn't help us much.
But!, looking a bit deeper we can learn something quite valuable.
"The state of being happy".
We all want to be happy ... so let's just do it!

Rather than chasing happiness, why don't you allow it to emerge??
Happiness is what emerges when we are

  • doing things we enjoy
  • not experiencing negative emotions

look to the babies folks

babies are always happy unless they are crying ...
it's actually quite simple ...
happiness is the normal state of existence.
It's how we are meant to be.
When we are stressed, angry or upset we inhibit happiness ...

when we deal with those issues happiness returns.
The reason most* people struggle with happiness is that they have too many unresolved problems.

let me give you an example

Person A = Happy ...

but!
They get a traffic ticket
They have an argument with their boss at work
They are stressed about an upcoming event.

Now person A = frustrated, experiencing unresolved emotions, stressed ...
when they are experiencing all of those things they can't really feel happy.

So what we end up experiencing is a "near-constant" state of being overwhelmed by our lives. This over stimulation burdens us with fear, anxiety and stress and we don't have time to experience happiness because we are ALWAYS IN A PROBLEM SOLVING STATE.

Let me elaborate.

The brain has different "types of functioning". These are described by the pattern of brain waves that you are producing. The common ones are Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma and Theta.

Each of these brain wave states is tied to a different physiological state (how your body is functioning) as well as a "feeling state".

Our "problem solving" mind exists in the range of Beta ... this is correlated with being alert and engaged ... this is wonderful if we are trying to solve a complex problem but if we are running on
"high" all the time it can lead to burnout, excessive stress and exhaustion!

Normally the brain oscillates between delta/theta and alpha ... going from periods of relaxation to relaxed awareness ... See the common theme ...

We are meant to stay relaxed and active ... and be "ready" for shorter periods of high stress. In our modern world, with near constant stressors we are always in this beta, problem solving state, and never have time to really kick back and relax.

No wonder are bodies are not experiencing pleasurable emotions. They are probably experiencing various levels of fatigue that cause us to be unable to produce the requisite neurotransmitters to even feel happy!

Our goal is not to create happiness but rather make sure we are maintaining the necessary state for happiness to emerge on it's own.

Here are some simple tips you can implement

  • Focus on your physical health.
Exercise and healthy eating are key. Your body is the vehicle with which you experience reality. An unhealthy body will limit the depth of your positive experiences.
  • Deal with problems rather than procrastinate.
We have a HUGE amount of subconscious processes going on at any given time. Each problem in life that we leave unsolvedadds an activity to our brains task manager. These add processing load and can lead to us feeling overwhelmed.
  • Get adequate rest!
You can not feel excited and fatigued at the same time. When we don't give our bodies the time they need to rest they don't work properly! Stop being silly!!
