Tumbuhan paku mempunyai kotak sprangium atau spora. Pada spongarium dihasilkan spora, banyak sporangium terkmpul dalam satu wadah yang disebut sorus, yang terlindungi oleh suatu selaput yaitu Indusium.

Fase pembuatan spora dalam hidup tumbuhan paku disebut dengan generasi sporofit dan fase pembentukan gamet yang disebut generasi gametofit. Keturunan pada tumbuhan paku terjadi secara bergiliran (metagenesi) dengan dua generasi, yaitu generasi gametofit dan generasi sporofit.

Tubuhan paku jika dibedakan berdasarkan jenis sporanya yaitu sebagai berikut : tumbuhan paku heterospora, homospora, dan peralihan homosporaheterospora.

Tumbuhan paku keturunan homospora menghasilkan spora yang ukurannya sama tidak dapat dibedakan antara spora jantan dan spora betina.
