Strange Noises : A short microflash

She awoke from a dream to a slight rustling sound.
Shivers raced up and down her back. The woman reached over to the nightstand, and switched on the lamp.

Glancing around the room she stammered a few breathless words.
“Anybody in here? Lacy is that you?”
The cat scurried from a corner near the window, jumped on the bed, and snuggled next to her pillow. The woman sighed as she stroked the velvet fur, her loyal companion purred softly.

She turned off the light, and fell asleep.
An hour later another strange noise woke her up.

Lips quivered, palms sweated.
“Answer me!” she shouted.
“Anybody in here?”

Dead silence. Again, she turned the lamp off. Stiff goosebumps erupted along both arms. Thirty minutes dragged on until she finally fell asleep, curled up on her side staring into the cat’s emerald eyes.

A third time a louder noise than before woke her up to a dreadful surprise.
A deep raspy voice echoed across the floor.

“I’m underneath your bed fool.”
