Some quotes about learning, and my reply to them

in #learning6 years ago (edited)

I often find that I disagree with famous quotes. I disagree with some of these below. Do you agree with them, or disagree?

"You cannot open the book without learning something."-Confucius

Confucius has obviously never met me.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
Mahatma Gandhi

Most people who who live as if they're going to die tomorrow never learn much of anything in my experience.

“It is not that I'm so smart. But I stay with the questions much longer.”
Albert Einstein

I stay with questions all my life. They usually come for two weeks, and never leave.

“We learn from failure, not from success!”
Bram Stoker, Dracula

If that's the case, I'm the most learned person in the whole world.

Spoon feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon.”
E.M. Forster

Yeah, but at least it keeps us from going hungry.

“I have learned all kinds of things from my many mistakes. The one thing I never learn is to stop making them.”
Joe Abercrombie, Last Argument of Kings

This is either honest, or so profound I have no idea what he's talking about.

“Learning never exhausts the mind.”
Leonardo da Vinci

I say if you're not tired after learning, you haven't learned anything.

“The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.”
B.B. King

With concern to material things this is certainly true, but people often lose what they have learned so it's not completely true. In the future, technology will certainly be able to erase people's memories. Think of someone with dementia. They learned a lot throughout their life, but then they lose it.
