Il "paziente zero" è l'uomo di origine olandese, appassionato di birdwatching, che si ammalò pochi giorni dopo l'imbarco e morì sulla nave l'11 aprile.
Si è parlato di una possibile contaminazione in una discarica di Ushuaia, la città da dove è salpata la crociera, un ammasso di rifiuti infestato dai ratti e frequentato da uccelli necrofagi.
Leo Schilperoord ucciso dall'hantavirus, aveva viaggiato per cinque mesi con la moglie, prima di imbarcarsi sulla MV Hondius.
Aveva effettuato diverse escursioni in auto attraverso l'Argentina, oltre che in Cile e in Uruguay, prima di arrivare nella regione da dove la nave era partita l'1 aprile 2026.
L'OMS sta indagando sulla possibilità che possa essersi infettato prima di salire sulla nave, nel viaggio on the road.
La coppia avrebbe visitato luoghi in cui era presente la specie di ratto che fa da serbatoio all'hantavirus.
Il contagio potrebbe essere avvenuto tra il 16 febbraio e il 13 marzo, quando i due si trovavano in una regione montuosa della Patagonia, nelle province di Chubut, Neuquén o Río Negro, in base al calcolo dei tempi di incubazione del virus, che si manifesta anche dopo 8 settimane dal contagio iniziale.

"Patient Zero" is the Dutchman, a passionate birdwatcher, who fell ill a few days after boarding and died on the ship on April 11.
There has been talk of possible contamination at a landfill in Ushuaia, the city from which the cruise departed, a waste dump infested with rats and frequented by carrion birds.
Leo Schilperoord, killed by hantavirus, had been traveling for five months with his wife before boarding the MV Hondius.
He had taken several road trips through Argentina, as well as Chile and Uruguay, before arriving in the region from which the ship departed on April 1, 2026.
The WHO is investigating the possibility that he may have been infected before boarding the ship, during the road trip.
The couple reportedly visited places where the rat species that serves as a reservoir for hantavirus was present.
The infection may have occurred between February 16 and March 13, when the two were in a mountainous region of Patagonia, in the provinces of Chubut, Neuquén, or Río Negro, based on the virus's incubation period, which can manifest itself up to eight weeks after initial infection.

Santo cielo, brutta storia. Ma la moglie è sopravvissuta, quantomeno ? L'OMS già anni fa allertava riguardo a una nuova pandemia peggiore del COVID (per la serie pozzo senza fondo) e ora, insomma...
Si è una brutta storia, però è un virus molto diverso dal COVID per quanto riguarda la diffusione. Spero solo che i media non cominciano a creare allarmismo per vendere di più.
Bisogna vedere se veramente stavolta venderanno di più o si troveranno davanti spettatori dalle tasche piene del covid che non li degneranno d'attenzione (si spera, quantomeno).
