I social network sono ancora social?/ Are social networks still social? [ITA/ENG]
Quando nacquero, alla fine degli anni Novanta, i social network promettevano di accorciare le distanze e connettere le persone.
Con il tempo, però, le piattaforme hanno iniziato a privilegiare i contenuti suggeriti dagli algoritmi e oggi gran parte di ciò che troviamo nei feed proviene da account sconosciuti selezionati da sistemi automatici.
In questo sistema, il parametro decisivo diventa il tempo che trascorriamo a scrollare i post: più a lungo una persona rimane online, più annunci pubblicitari può visualizzare.
Gli algoritmi vengono progettati per massimizzare "l'engagement", cioè il livello di interazione e di attenzione. Contenuti estremi, controversi o emotivamente forti tendono a generare più "reactions" e quindi a essere mostrati con maggiore frequenza. L'obiettivo è mantenere l'utente coinvolto il più possibile.
Gli algoritmi filtrano, amplificano e orientano le informazioni determinando quali temi devono essere visibili e quali far scomparire dai radar digitali.
Il rischio è che le piattaforme diventino potenti strumenti divisivi, capaci di modellare conversazioni, polarizzare opinioni e indirizzare l'attenzione collettiva.

When they first appeared in the late 1990s, social networks promised to shorten distances and connect people.
Over time, however, platforms began to prioritize algorithm-suggested content, and today a large portion of what we see in our feeds comes from unknown accounts selected by automated systems.
In this system, the key parameter becomes the time we spend scrolling posts: the longer a person stays online, the more advertisements they can be shown.
Algorithms are designed to maximize “engagement,” meaning the level of interaction and attention. Extreme, controversial, or emotionally charged content tends to generate more reactions, and therefore is shown more frequently. The goal is to keep users engaged for as long as possible.
Algorithms filter, amplify, and shape information by determining which topics should be visible and which should disappear from the digital radar.
The risk is that platforms become powerful divisive tools, capable of shaping conversations, polarizing opinions, and directing collective attention.

These old social networks will now remain money-making machines. We need to find truly alternative, open-source social networks where no one profits. And everyone can express themselves freely. Much like we already do on Steemit.
