Telecamere nascoste hanno monitorato il traffico dentro e fuori una caverna dell'Uganda, popolata da pipistrelli che veicolano il virus Marburg.

I ricercatori del Kyambura Lion Project in Uganda hanno fotografato oltre 14 specie di vertebrati impegnate a cacciare pipistrelli e mangiare le loro carcasse.

Leopardi, iene, cercopitechi dal diadema, aquile coronate, varani, zibetti africani, genette panterine, pitoni africani, babbuini, roditori e diversi rapaci.

Le telecamere nascoste hanno anche filmato 214 persone spingersi fino all'ingresso della caverna, incuranti dei divieti e dei cartelli che segnalavano il rischio di contagio.

Gli scienziati sapevano già che i pipistrelli della frutta egiziani possono trasmettere il virus Marburg all'uomo o direttamente o attraverso ospiti intermedi, ma questa è la prima volta che è possibile vedere una così ampia moltitudine di possibili intermediari in un hotspot noto del patogeno.

Hidden cameras monitored traffic in and out of a cave in Uganda inhabited by bats carrying the Marburg virus.

Researchers from the Kyambura Lion Project in Uganda photographed more than 14 vertebrate species hunting bats and feeding on their carcasses.

Leopards, hyenas, blue monkeys, crowned eagles, monitor lizards, African civets, large-spotted genets, African pythons, baboons, rodents, and several birds of prey.

The hidden cameras also captured 214 people venturing all the way to the cave entrance, ignoring restrictions and warning signs about the risk of infection.

Scientists already knew that Egyptian fruit bats can transmit the Marburg virus to humans either directly or through intermediate hosts, but this is the first time it has been possible to observe such a wide range of potential intermediaries in a known pathogen hotspot.
