Chapter 3: Step Two
Step Two-Set those goals
We've all been there, you want it, you can envision it, but, you cant seem to make it down the street to acquire it. One of the most important things that I've learned is that you must must must ( three times to make it stick ) set a list of goals. Now while this may sound easy or too simple, well, that's because it is. I'm sure everyone had heard of a dream board “if you dream it you can achieve it” that's because its true. As tacky as it might sound, its 100% true, if you stop and sit down and think clearly of what you want, you are able to build a road map of what you want clearly and precisely.
One of my first investing venture was in precious metals, it was actually a ridiculously fun hobby, it helped to fill my desire to collect and also my desire to acquire, retain and grow wealth. Once I got the collecting bug it was all I could think about, I set out to read as many books on the topic as I could, I also got lost on the internet, watching video after video of people collecting, of people showing their years worth of precious metals in the video. Its an amazing thing to see someone show off their collection of gold coins and realize that it can be done. Because lets think about it, for those who aren't filthy stinking rich, when you think about gold and silver coins, what comes to mind? A large man sitting on a throne with a golden cup surrounded by mountains of coins endlessly flowing around him. Ok, that might be what comes to my mind, but you get the picture.
One set of videos in particular caught my attention more than the others, while it was nice to see people showing off what they had, I was also looking for inspiration. Now, keep in mind this was years ago ( which makes it even more fascinating because I wonder where these peope are now ) I don't collect coins anymore because I've become entangled with Real Estate, so, this was at the beginning of my investing adventure, when I wanted to have my hand in every pot that I could find, anything that helped me to learn more, helped me to absorb more knowledge about money and wealth, I was all for it.
The guy in one of his first uploads actually had nothing to do with coins and collecting precious metals at all, it was actually a really sad video, it was him talking about being in over $60,000 of debt, not knowing where to turn and how he felt that he had in some way failed as a human because he was unable to provide not only for himself and for his wife. I remember after watching a few of his videos I scrolled to see the first one he had posted and was absolutely floored at the level of recovery in a few months time.
By video three, the tone was already slightly different, he had come up with an idea, and a simple one at that, he was going to write down his goals, plain and simple, he was going to make it so that everything that he wanted in his life would be laid out before him. And it wasn't anything astronomical either, it was a) financial security b) be out of debt and c) build wealth so that he would never be in the same situation again.
The idea was simple and he executed it with nearly no effort which I found astonishing at the time ( until you learn that everyone has this in them ). he started out small as most do, he started selling things in his home, old televisions, unused video games, phones, unopened things, clothes still with tags on them. He jokingly said one day that he was going to ask his boss for a raise because he had been with the company for so long, funny enough, the boss thought it was a great idea, the increase wasn't spectacular by any means, but it helped to reduce his debt even more, he had begun to pay off any and all credit cards that he had acquired, quickly destroying them after the last payment had been made, even having a few celebration videos where he cut them up and showed off a new precious metals purchase.
The best part of it all, nearly 6 months into the experiment, he was nearly debt free, he said he had done it by selling nearly ALL the things in the house he had purchased after years and years and years of buying ( most people are unaware that each year people spend around $10-20,000 on unnecessary items that they use once and then never even touch again ) he had quit smoking, which saved him hundreds every month which allowed him to pay off more debt, when he went out to drink with friends, he made sure he was on a strict $5 budget, he said one of the main things was snacking that saved him the most and he went into more detail. He said as time had gone on and his debts had mounted more and more he started snacking where ever he went, what started out having an extra sandwich at the local shop turned into two sandwiches with chips, a cookie and a large drink, and this is all after he had already eaten Lunch. He said that walking past the local donut shop, he would look through the window and think, it was either him getting 2 donuts a day or at the end of the week with the money he saved, he would be able to buy another coin made of pure silver. It was not only fascinating but incredibly inspiring to watch. At the end of the year, this man had zero debts, he had paid off everything, from clever saving, to clever spending, a raise and living a more minimalist life style, he had ALSO amassed a collection of nearly $30,000 worth of gold and silver coins.
He cited his astonishment at how life had changed for him in such a short amount of time, it went from being down in the dumps with heavy depression to his heart beating quicker at the thought of amassing more wealth and the comfort within him that he had the knowledge to do so. The last I had seen of one of his videos he had collected just around $100,000 worth of precious metals and was starting a college fund for his child.
These things didn't happen to this guy by accident, as previously stated in the last chapter, he got over himself, he got over the sadness, he got over the “woe is me” complex, and he got his life together. When you set goals all things will fall into place, there isn't some large secret, there isn't some mysterious voice that will whisper into your ear and give you all the secrets, they already lay within you, you just have to let them out.
Before the conclusion of this chapter its necessary that you get a piece of paper and a pen and write down the things you want to accomplish. Go and write them now, ….as in now, now. This very moment, you're reading this book because you want to achieve your dreams, build wealth and become financially independent, so start now.
oh waow....this is amazing work...and what more its free :P
