Surprises On the Homestead: WILD Goldenseal!! (DTube Vlog)
Whaaaaat!! How did we miss this?
For the last 3 years, I have walked thousands of times by these plants- our kitchen and main path is a mere 15 ft away! How have we not noticed them??
Today while I was washing recently dug potatoes to fry up for lunch, I spotted something red that looked a lot like Goldenseal...
I went to investigate and as I got closer I realized- it is Goldenseal!!!
you can see our composting toilet - the Fert Lab- and hammock in the background. We hang out here!!!
We planted over 200 rhizomes last year 75 ft from here. To cultivate the roots for medicine, sale, etc... How amazing that we have some growing wild that we never even noticed!!
This keeps happening on the land and I am so so grateful!!!
What a beautiful life!

I am learning all kinds of great information from you guys. Never even heard of Goldenseal. Now I have to do some research and learn more about it. Lucky you having it growing wild :)
Isn't it awesome!? Such a great find @mountainjewel!! Thanks for sharing.
Xoxoxo @yogajill
💚💚💚🌿 happy to hear it. Goldenseal is an amazing plant with a great history. I’m sure you’ll find some interesting tidbits in your research ☺️ so thankful to find these wild stands AND to know where we chose to cultivate it is a good spot!! Haha
ahh~!!!!! this is amazing. i love this plant so much. it will appear where needed. take care of it. nibble on the leaves. the fact that it is flowering and fruiting makes me thing they are mature, and not plants that skipped away from your plantings. i wonder if you have any other hidden patched there. the birds can eat the berries and transport the seeds elsewhere!
<3 yeah so amazing right! me too. it's amazing to me how the plants i need and am attracted to keep showing up. i mean, as you say, obviously this goldenseal has been here for a while (my first thought too was somehow did we drop a rhizome or two or three?!? last year when we were washing some to make medicine? hahah nope this has been here for a while!). i think we must have hidden patches all around which makes my heart feel so much more connected to this wondrous place. medicine does show up at the right time/when we need it most. that's how i feel about the native skullcap too as that has proved to be such an excellent anxiety/calming support for me.
A gift from the Goddess. To your health!
Such a gift! Just wow ❤️
What a gift! lovely how nature always provides little surprises. Just when you think you know your land like the back of your hand...
What a blessing
It really is a beautiful life! Such lovely gifts.
yes! such a blessing!
Nature.
nature ;)
Finding the Goldenseal will help you and your family when you need an antibiotic and antiviral! :)
yes! we made a gallon batch of tincture from sustainably and biodynamically/organically grown roots from a friend's land, but it feels amazing knowing that we have a wild patch. i'll let this one continue to reseed :)
total SCORE!!!!!!!!!
This is incredibly useful information! My dream homestead will definitely include having lots of medicinal herbs and plants! I would love to know how Fert is designed! Do you compost your blackwater and make it clean enough to be used in nature again? I saw this technique on youtube and it got me super facinated in making zero waste :)
by fert i'm guessing you mean the fert lab/composting toilet?
it is a humanure system (you can google this and find a pdf of the book "humanure handbook" to learn more). basically it's a composting system without the use of any water. we do our business and then put saw dust on it. that's all. it's very simple. then we let it sit for a year or two (but you can also do "faster" systems) and put it at the base of fruit trees and such (people also do plants, it's up to the user.) zero waste for sure and no need to have an expensive or complex system!
