MATOOKE😋

in Team Uganda4 years ago

Greetings everyone, i hope your all doing fine. Today I want to talk about matooke.
Matooke are also referred to as cooking bananas/ plaintain bananas because they are harvested when they are still green then cooked. They are good to eat as they are rich in potassium.

So on Saturday i traveled to my home town in Rukungiri with my mum to visit my grandfather from daddy's side.
We set off at 8:00am and reached our destination at around 6pm. We were tired so we ate supper and went to sleep.

In the morning after breakfast, we went ahead to go and visit grandpa who took us on a tour of his banana plantation.
The matooke in his plantation were looking big as you can see in the picture below;

When it rains alot which it does, the plantations can get destroyed and the matooke can fall; that is why they use sticks to hold the matooke in place so that they can fully grow before dropping on the ground...just as u can see in the above picture.

The Bakiga (my people) tend to grow alot of matooke. At least every household in my hometown has a banana plantation. As you can see in the picture below; there is a banana plantation just outside our house.

And because very many people grow matooke this side, it is sold at very low prices. I remember sometime back in January of this year, me and my family were in the village for a burial and on our way back, we bought four bunches of matooke for a mere 20,000shs. You cannot get the same amount of matooke in Kampala for the same price thats for sure.

Much as we grow alot of matooke, am not a huge fun when it comes to eating them on a daily basis.🤣
