Memorial Day Weekend, Thank You!

in #memorialday6 years ago (edited)

This past weekend was Memorial Weekend in America. So, this will be a post to share how I enjoyed my weekend and give thanks to the military people in my family that have worked to preserve freedoms for those in the US, Europe, and Korea.

Thank you, Grandpa Dale

My Grandpa Dale, a great man that lived a fulfilling life and raised my mother right to bring me upright as well :) The proudest he ever was of me was knowing that I was coming to study in Korea if only he could see me now. He was stationed in Korea during the War.

Thank you, Grandpa Larry

My other Grandfather, Larry, served in the Airforce. Funny story is that he applied for Europe in general, he wanted to be placed in Germany. It was after WWII, so it would have been an excellent time to be put there. However; the placement he got was in Iceland, still Europe but as far from Europe as possible. The moral of this story being, know what you want when you ask for something 😂

He made the best out of it though, he made it to Germany eventually but as far as Iceland went, he had some good times and stories to share with me.

Thank you, Pops

My father served in the Army and was stationed in Hawaii; he also had routine runs to Korea to teach radio repair to Korean soldiers. Because of my family's experiences with serving in Korea, it gave me some of the inspiration to go to Korea myself. I thought about serving in the armed forces myself, but my father told me that was one of the dumbest ideas I could have because he got injured during his service that allowed me to go to school on the G.I. Bill. So, he felt that if I wanted to see the world, that I should get a job that allows me to do that, instead of risk my life trying to see it.

#What I did for Memorial Weekend
The weekend was pretty relaxing; I went to the EDM concert Friday night. Had a great time there, then the next day I went to a language exchange with a friend. That was fun; I have never experienced a language exchange where you meet people at a cafe like this was. I didn't really get to practice my Korean, but honestly, that was to be expected lol

After that, we went to get dinner at Tequilaz, a Mexican bar in Gwangju.

Then, we went to have bingsu (빙수) a kind of Korean dessert that involves shaved iced, sweetened condensed milk, and toppings. Sul Bing Cafe is a popular chain restaurant for bingsu in Korea. When I studied here, it was a trendy spot for me. This time around, I have only had the stuff two times.

That was my weekend; I hope that everyone else had a great weekend and took a moment to remember those that made the ultimate sacrifices for us to live freely. Thank you to any military personnel reading this, your service is appreciated.

I tend to write about life in Korea as a foreigner, food, photos from trips, and things teaching related. If that interest you and you like this post, please give me a vote and follow
