Chronic Stress: Definition, Causes, Symptoms, and How to Overcome It
Humans are creatures of God who have mental potential. They are creatures who have elements of reason, heart and lust. That with the existence of these elements, humans can potentially have a structure that we usually call the structure of the human psyche. If it is not maintained properly, then this mind or psyche will have stress. This stress, for example, is in the form of chronic stress. Don't ever think that it is adults and teenagers who are often exposed to chronic stress. Even children can potentially have chronic stress.
Childhood is divided into two, namely early and late. Early childhood occurs from the age of 2-5 years where there is development between parent-child relationships, habits of cleanliness and discipline, sexual development, relationships with siblings, realizing their individuality and others. Late childhood usually begins at the age of 5 or 6 years which is marked by strong physical growth and the emergence of very important intellectual abilities.
Then what about when in the golden age of children like this, they are diagnosed as having chronic stress? So on this occasion I will discuss Chronic Stress.
Definition
Chronic stress is similar to the definition of other diseases related to the mind. Many children do not prepare themselves to deal with stress so this disorder often recurs and repeats itself. Understanding which was originally an understanding of stress will become a danger if left unchecked and become chronic.
Chronic stress is not only a mental disorder, but has spread to physical and emotional. Children who experience chronic stress will lose a lot of time and energy trying to resolve conflicts that occur in their bodies. If not treated properly, then this can refer to mental disorders.
Causes
The history of Mental Health has long been known. Various kinds of human interpretations of a person's mental condition lead to various ways to overcome them as well. For example, people suffering from Passive Aggressive Stress, or Histrionic Personality Stress are considered mystical.
Mental health factors in children are usually influenced by internal factors, namely factors from the child himself and external factors, namely factors from the environment. The exact cause of chronic stress is not known, but there are several factors that cause chronic stress as follows:
- Descendants
Genes are the basic biological units of heredity that contain instructions for the function of every cell in the body. Each child has their own genetics. Chronic stress may be passed from parents to children through genes.
- Body state
Chronic stress is often associated with a person's brain called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters function to help nerve cells in the brain to communicate with each other. If the chemicals are out of balance or not working properly let alone defects or injuries to certain brain areas it can be associated with some chronic stress.
- Psychological Trauma
Some chronic stressors may also be triggered by psychological trauma, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, significant early loss (such as loss of a parent), and neglect.
- Environmental Stress
External factors that can cause chronic stress are environmental stress. Stressful or traumatic events can trigger stress in a person with susceptibility to chronic stress.
Symptom
Diagnosis is a result that combines the statement of dynamic and etiologic factors, as well as an estimate of the prognosis and the usual identification of the patient's condition based on one of the accepted clinical manifestations. This diagnosis is taken from several very comprehensive approaches ranging from approaches from doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers who work as a team.
Chronically stressed children were studied through interviews with parents, relatives, friends, family doctors, hospital records, laboratory reports, school records and social investigations. In short, the diagnosis is taken from the background picture that influences the symptoms of chronic stress.
How to overcome
The simple steps can be seen as follows:
- Doctor Checkup
Usually the doctor is tasked with carrying out a physical and neurological examination as a form of finding organic factors that may be important causative factors for chronic stress. Medical examinations and physiological tests can indeed be carried out by psychiatrists, but in practice these examinations are almost always carried out by doctors. Organ systems are investigated both by direct examination and by general investigation in the laboratory to reduce the presence of physical conditions associated with chronic stress problems.
While physiological tests are carried out by a neurologist if behavioral stress indicates possible stress on the brain or spinal cord, for example, there is suspicion of brain damage (due to injury or infection).
- Psychological Examination
Psychologists are tasked with conducting interviews with pediatric patients by presenting and explaining the results of a series of psychological tests that assist in assessing individual abilities and personality dynamics.
- Psychiatric Social Worker Examination
The psychiatric social worker performs a series of interview techniques and field visits, preparing the patient's life history which includes records of his development, school achievement, adjustment in society, economic status, and other factors related to the child.
An interview is a face-to-face treatment between a patient and a clinical expert, usually carried out by psychologists and psychiatric social workers. This is preceded by a telephone notification by the patient to determine when the interview will be held. The interview was conducted as an initial opportunity to learn more about the problem and the patient's history. On the basis of this information, psychologists and psychiatric social workers may obtain an initial diagnostic impression and make an appropriate assessment.
The interview format provided may vary from expert to expert but generally covers topics such as: identifying data, description of the problem raised, psychosocial history, medical or psychiatric history and medical problems or medication. After conducting the interview, psychologist and social worker psychiatrist assesses the patient's cognitive function in the form of a mental status examination.
- Through mood
Affective mood which refers to the appropriateness of emotions or feelings associated with objects or ideas. Then through the mood, namely the strong emotions shown during the interview, such as sadness, anxiety, or anger. Emotions in psychology can shape a person into a different person, where not only strong but also dominant emotions can cause a person to change his personality.
- Psychiatrist
Psychiatrists themselves have the authority to investigate the mental status of pediatric patients in relation to all the findings that have been made by the above parties. Although today there is a tendency to establish a diagnosis of chronic stress through an interdisciplinary approach. However, the ultimate responsibility for making a proper diagnosis and setting up a treatment program rests with a psychiatrist.
How to Prevent
Physical Assessment: Through the appropriateness of children's general appearance, style of self-care, how to wear clothes and so on.
Behavioral Observation: An assessment of the patient's verbal and nonverbal behavior in which the examination records signs of psychological stress.
Memory Check: Namely children's memory of events that have recently occurred or events that have occurred long ago.
Sensorium Assessment: This is an assessment of an individual's entire sensory apparatus to analyze a child's focus of attention, capacity for concentration, and level of awareness of the world.
Perception Observation: That is a psychological process in which the child's ability to interpret the information provided by the five senses.
Thought Examination: Examination of children's thought processes which refers to the form and content of thoughts whether the thoughts are logical and coherent.
Conclusions
After children are diagnosed with chronic stress, the parties around them should always try to make their recovery. In the school environment, teachers and their friends should play a greater role in helping her healing. The words spoken by teachers to students are like arrows released from their bows.
The words spoken by teachers to students will determine their future and affect their mental health. From the family side, they must always be patient and more open with children who are experiencing this stress so that they feel valued and can recover faster.
