Hello dear Steemingzen💧 members, how are you? I hope you are all well and always in God's protection. On this occasion, allow me @muhammadhidayatt to post on the Steeming Community and the theme I will discuss here is: Causes of Sinusitis and How to Overcome It.
Dear Friends, there are various factors that can cause sinusitis, such as viral infections and bacterial infections. Most sinusitis goes away on its own within 1-2 weeks. But there are also some causes of sinusitis that should get special attention.
Causes of sinusitis can also be different for each person. But broadly speaking, sinusitis can be caused by infection and irritation. Both of these can cause the sinus walls to become inflamed and swollen, thereby reducing sinus function. Healthy sinuses will produce mucus to moisten the sinus and nasal cavities and trap dust and germs. The nasal cavity and sinuses are connected by a small opening called the ostium and through this ostium the air that enters the nose is also circulated into the sinuses to be filtered.
Various Causes of Sinusitis
Here I will discuss some of the things that can be the cause of sinusitis, including the following:
1. Viral infection
Viral infections are the most common cause of sinusitis. Sinusitis caused by a viral infection usually starts when you have a cold or flu. This viral infection can also cause the sinus walls to swell, thus blocking the ostium that should be the place for mucus to escape. As a result, mucus will accumulate in the sinus cavities.
2. Bacterial infection
Although rare, bacterial infections can also be a cause of sinusitis. Bacteria that enter the nose can cause excessive mucus production, resulting in a buildup of mucus that is difficult to expel in the sinuses. Conditions like this will support the growth of germs in the sinuses and will cause sinusitis.
3. Fungal infection
Fungal sinusitis usually occurs in people who have a weakened immune system. If our immune system is weak, then the fungus will be easier to grow, especially in damp body parts such as sinuses and will cause inflammation.
4. Allergies
Allergies to dust, pollen, mites and animal dander can also cause allergic rhinitis. This condition will cause swelling of the nasal wall so that it clogs the ostium. In addition, allergies can also increase mucus production. The combination of these two conditions can cause excess mucus to build up in the sinuses. As a result, bacteria also become easier to grow and sinusitis occurs.
5. Nasal polyps
Polyps can grow in the nose or sinuses. Regardless of its location, a polyp mass can cause obstruction of the ostium and block the passage of mucus from the sinuses. This buildup of mucus can cause inflammation which can eventually trigger sinusitis.
How to Overcome Sinusitis:
Mild sinusitis can generally be treated on its own without the need to go to the hospital. Below I will explain some of the steps you can take, including the following:
- Enough rest.
- Drink lots of water, at least 2 liters per day (I recommend warm water).
- Avoid allergy triggers, such as animal dander and plant powders.
- Do not smoke or inhale other people's secondhand smoke.
- Clean the nose with a salt water solution to relieve swelling.
- Use a humidifier to humidify the air in the room.
In addition, if you feel pain symptoms around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead, then you can also take painkillers that you can buy at the nearest pharmacy without a doctor's prescription such as Paracetamol.
Sinusitis Treatment
If you have done the way to deal with Sinusitis that I have described above but symptoms of sinusitis such as nasal congestion and runny or headache do not go away in 1 week (even accompanied by fever and cough), then you should immediately consult a doctor.
Sinusitis symptoms can be similar to the symptoms of Covid-19 which is becoming a pandemic right now. If you are a person who is at risk of contracting the Corona virus, you should just self-isolate and call the Covid-19 hotline at 119 Ext 19 for further instructions. However, if you are not at risk or at low risk of contracting the Corona virus, maybe your doctor will prescribe you medication to relieve symptoms that arise due to sinusitis.
The medication can be steroid or ephedrine nasal sprays or drops to reduce swelling, antihistamines if sinusitis is caused by allergies, and antibiotics if sinusitis is caused by a bacterial infection. However, if sinusitis does not improve despite using medication, you can refer to an ENT specialist. In some cases, your doctor may also recommend surgery to drain the pus and improve the flow of mucus from your sinuses..
