Muscle cramps occur when the muscles unknowingly contract by themselves. Various things can cause muscle cramps, such as tired or overused muscles, because your body is dehydrated, or because you do not get enough electrolytes, such as potassium or magnesium.

Fluids can help the body process minerals, where minerals can help muscles work more smoothly. Quoted from Healthline, there are several solutions that you can try yourself to overcome the muscle cramps in the legs.

1. Stretching

Relax the cramped muscles. Stop any activity that can cause cramps and stretch the muscles gently. Then, muscle massage when stretched.

2. Magnesium

"My first recommendation for patients who come with cramps of leg complaints is the consumption of magnesium," "says Sarah Thompson, a Doula and acupuncture specialist at Sacred Vessel Acupuncture.

If you like having muscle cramps, you can try adding more magnesium to your daily diet list, such as nuts and seeds as they are excellent sources of magnesium.

3. Soak into warm water

Many professionals such as trainers and physical therapists recommend the use of magnesium outside the body in the form of Epsom salts (salts containing magnesium and sulfur). This salt can be applied to a wet cloth and pressed into a stiff muscle or cramp, or you can also add the salt to warm water for a soak.

"If you're not near the bath, take a heating pad," said certified Personal Trainer, Shane Allen.

4. Hydration

Another way that can stop cramps in the legs is to consume lots of fluids. It may take longer to overcome the feeling of cramp, but after you consume lots of water or drinks containing electrolytes, it will be able to prevent other cramps.

5. By moving

"If you have leg cramps, the best thing to do is to go for a walk," said certified Personal Trainer, Henry Halse. "It will send a signal that your muscles need to contract and then relax, just like pressing the reset button on the muscle". Halse advised to always massage the cramping part with routine.
