Spirit of Love

The Bible in II Timothy 1:7 says that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. There is a spirit of fear but there is also the Spirit of power, the Spirit of love and the Spirit of a sound mind. The scriptural antidote to the spirit of fear is the Spirit of Love. When you are full of love for God, you are able to believe Him, and it imparts you with boldness. This comes as a result of intimacy with God, thereby driving away all fears. 1 John 4:18 says: There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

When the Holy Spirit comes into your heart, He imparts you with love. According to Romans 5:5; ...the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. The Spirit of Love fills you with love for God and for people; it takes the Holy Spirit for a man to express love. The attributes of Love as described in 1 Corinthians 13, include but are not limited to longsuffering, kindness, humility, joy in truth, peacefulness, selflessness, endurance, hope, believe (faith). These are the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5: 22 – 23. This means that the fruit of the Holy Spirit is Love manifesting as peace, joy, longsuffering (patience), gentleness, kindness, faith, meekness (humility), temperance (self-control).

The implication is that the primary ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives is to birth and express His love through us. That is why 1 John 4:8 says; He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Love; there is no way a man could claim to know the Holy Spirit without the evidence of love towards God and men in his life.

It is easy for a man to claim to be full of the Holy Spirit; the man may release a few powerful tongues to authenticate his claim of intimacy with the Holy Spirit. But, we must realise that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Love, who makes us love God and man. 1 John 4:20-21, says: If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. In summary, the evidence that we are full of the Holy Spirit is our love for God as shown in our love for fellow men.

Prayer/Action

• Pray that you will walk in perfect love for God and fellow men.

• Ask the Holy Spirit to shed the love of God upon your heart .

• Renounce the spirit of fear, hatred and disunity that hinder your walk in love.
