When Should You Use Makeup Brushes Instead of Sponges?
When you’re applying your makeup you might wonder whether you’re using the right applicator to get the best finish. From using makeup brushes and sponges, or even just your fingers, it can be difficult to know what’s going to achieve maximum impact.
One of the first things you’ll need to consider is the product you’re applying to your face as well as the finish you want to achieve. For example, if you want precision and saturation, a makeup brush is often best, while achieving the right blend tends to be easier with a sponge.
Applying Powder-Based Products with Makeup Brushes
When you’re applying a powder-based product to your face, e.g. setting powder or blush, you’ll often find that a makeup brush works better with these formulas. That’s because a makeup brush will give you more control over how much product you’re putting on your skin. But if you want to make sure the edges of this product are blended in thoroughly, you can always use a sponge to do this.
Equally, if you’re an avid cream contouring fan, you’ll want to enlist the help of a damp makeup sponge. This will mix your colors together beautifully, while also making sure no harsh lines appear at the edges.
Applying Liquid and Cream Foundations
Using makeup brushes to apply powder-based products is probably quite a straightforward example, however, when it comes to cream and liquid foundations that’s where the confusion can start to set in.
Realistically, you could just get straight in there with your fingers to apply these types of foundations. However, makeup sponges and brushes can achieve an altogether different finish for your complexion.
If you’re applying a liquid foundation, you might want to try using a synthetic makeup brush because it will help create an even, smooth finish and it’s much easier to clean when you’re done. Then, switch to your makeup sponge when you’re sheering out liquids and creams – but don’t forget how much product these sponges can absorb!
Applying Eyeshadow
Finally, your choice of tool for eyeshadow is a little more flexible. Fingers are perfect for one-color finishes and are also great for emulsifying cream shadows (blending it into your eyelid much easier).
If you are going to use a brush to apply eyeshadow, remember to team your brush’s density with the density of the product. Brushes with loose, fluffy bristles are ideal for powders but won’t work very well with liquids, so always use a harsher brush when dealing with thicker products.
Overall, depending on the look, style, and products you’re using, you’ll probably want to make sure you’ve got makeup brushes, sponges, and clean fingers at your disposal. This will help you achieve the look you want each and every time.
