#Horse dentist visits our horsie babies..
I hope this something new for most of you..
Alright. So here goes :-D After my baby girl was 2yrs old and I realized we would not have another baby again.. I started looking into new hobbies to keep my mind busy and would be around for years to come, and most of all a new challenge in life for me as things had become very negative.
Then it hit me.. I always wanted horses haha. at the time my husbands business was doing exceptionally well for us and we could afford it. So I started looking for a horse that ..spoke.. to me and then! I found a post with my baby boy Moonshadow. He is an Appaloosa pony. I just knew immediately that I loved him. So a few days later we set on the road to meet him and see if he and I connected, especially if my daughter Mikayla could make a connection with him.
Needless to say that they made a connection immediately. Anyways.. there you go. We ended up buying Moony and his brother Valhalla as I didn't have the heart to separate them, they had grown up together and always been friends and the day we visited the Stud to meet Moony, little Valhalla cried the whole time.
So here, we are at this post where our baby boys had to get their baby teeth extracted. .
Valhalla's two front teeth were stuck so they had to be extracted and then their dentist also removed their Wolf teeth so that it doesn't cause them pain later on if they were to wear a bit in life.
This apparatus is called a horse mouth opener.. and its pretty self explanatory..
The dentist begins his check up by assessing the horse's temperature and body weight for sedation.
He then injects the horse with a sedative injection and gives it a few minutes to kick in.
Once he can see the horse is comfortably drowsy, he then steps in and attaches the mouth opener to the horses head along with a pipe inside their mouth to keep their mouth open while he cranks open the apparatus enough so that he can easily reach the problem tooth/teeth without causing pain and discomfort to the horse.
Here, he is loosening Moony's front baby teeth as they were also stuck but we hoped that they would naturally fall out if we loosened them like this and then follow up by brushing his teeth daily with a salt solution and a nail brush. This didn't work and we later on had to get his dentist back in to extract his two front teeth as well.
I was very shocked to learn that in our country we only have 2 or 3 qualified Equine dentists at the moment. They also have to study in Germany or the united states as this training is not available locally in our varsity's.
We were very great full to be able to have the very best dentist available to tend to our babies needs. He was so caring and gentle towards our equine babies. This is a quality that is very often lacking in the most part around us.
I have inserted a picture of their wolf teeth above, I do not think many of you have had the chance to see something so special like this,, well at least I hope this is something new for you to read ;-)
So,,, if you have a horsey baby or even an older horse in your life. Please make sure to get them a dental check up just to make sure that their bite is right, wolf teeth are extracted and that they don't have any dental issues that could give them discomfort while you are riding them with a bit.
I do not believe in bits, but have found out that in some cases it is a good thing to have at hand. Although everyone who has experienced bitless riding says they will never look back at using bits again in their life!
I personally have both bits, as well as my Monty Roberts bitless bridle. I personally love my Monty Roberts and don't want to use anything else.
I hope you have found this new post of mine interesting and educational :-)
Love to all of you #steemians
I am writing my blog posts to create a source of main streem income for me for now.. I will never leave Steemit as I simply love all my new friends that I have made here, so no worries of losing me once my financial state is improved on ;-)
But seriously.. I am an animal activist.. Mother of 2... Helping hand wherever needed and right now I'm asking you all that every up vote coming my way right now is helping me in more ways than you can imagine!!
Currently I have 12dogs, 11cats, birds and 5 Horses, who all get the best care and love I can offer them but this is expensive..
I do not breed animals, only take in rescues' sometimes we do get the surprise that one of our rescues are pregnant but I do not believe in sterilizing them if the pregnancy is already far along as this is just as good as abortion in my eyes.
Lots of Love,
