The Desert Eagle employs a gas-powered mechanism that is normally found in rifles, in contrast to the short recoil or mass inertia mechanisms that are commonly employed in semi-automatic pistols. Unlike most pistols, the gun does not move during firing. When a cartridge is fired, the gases are conducted through a small hole in the barrel located near the chamber of the latter. The gases travel forward through a small tube under the barrel, to a cylinder near the muzzle. The slide / slide has a small piston in front that fits into the cylinder; When the gases reach the cylinder, they push the piston backwards. The bolt carrier moves backwards on two rails located on both sides of the barrel, operating the mechanism.
