Five Reasons Nigerian Police Misbehaves

Too many times we hear news that police killed someone, or opened fire and someone was killed by a stray bullet, or someone was arrested and jailed unjustly, or one bad thing or the other. Though there are some good men among the police officers, but so many of them are so corrupt and are ready to extort people of their hard earned money.

Here are five reasons Nigerian police misbehaves:
1.) ALCOHOLIC
majority of Nigerian police loves taking alcohol, as a matter of fact, they see alcohol as a way of life. In Lagos for example, there is no police station that doesn't have a place that they don't sell ogogoro (ethanol) around, either inside, beside or opposite the police station. There was a time when the Lagos state commissioner of police placed a ban on sales of alcohol in or around police station across the state, but we all know Nigeria nah.

2.) CONTENTMENT
the police are never contended with their salaries, they still prefer collecting bribes from people to sticking with their salaries, someone even said sometimes ago that if the Nigerian police are being paid 1 million naira daily, they will still collect bribe from people. It's so bad that they see it as a normal way of life, and if you're not doing it, they see you as too holy.

3.) CURSE
Police officers in Nigeria are the most cursed institution in the federation, maybe it's because of their fraudulent behavior or because they don't have conscience, only God knows.
Police officers are being cursed by different people on a daily basis, by either the people they have extorted or by the people they have jailed unjustly or by the families of the person they shot at etc. An average person becomes an instant enemy of lots of people immediately he Join the police, and he too is not spared of various levels of curses. Maybe it's because of the various curses rained on them that's making them misbehaving, who knows?

4.) BAD RECRUITING AND TRAINING STRATEGIES
Not just the police force is guilty of this, virtually all ministries in Nigeria recruit based on who one knows and not what one can do. One needs to know a top official to get a good paying job in Nigeria (though not in all cases, but in most cases). Sometimes ago, I visited the Police college at Ikeja in Lagos state and I was shocked to see their training, their classrooms, library and even their environment, they are something else, they are not qualified to be used by even a primary school, not to tak of the police force (I was just saying 'no wonder' in my mind).
There is even a section of the place that used strictly for affidavit and shops to sign and stamp them. There barracks is out of it, the buildings are dilapidated.
I feel they should be given more of psychological training than physical training.

5.) STINGINESS
An average Nigerian Police is so stingy, they want everything for free. They want a situation whereby whatever they point their fingers at should be given to them for free.
That's why you'll see a police officer who is not on uniform still be with his cap, so that they can take public transportation for free, they'll be like 'I BE STAFF' as if they are the ones fueling the vehicle for the owners, and that doesn't stop them from arresting the driver even when they didn't disobey any traffic rule. They can arrest them for not disobeying traffic rules.
Whenever a police officer visits you, he expects you to entertain him and whenever you come visiting, instead of reciprocating ones goodness, they will ask you for what you brought for them.
