The film currently has a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics are unanimous: like the previous sequels, First Blood 5: Last Blood is content to wallow in gory violence and ignore the once heartbreaking story of its protagonist. The filmmakers make Mexico seem like a sprawling wasteland of crime and death, and the Latino characters on screen are mostly criminals or stereotypes. Rambo films are rarely bastions of cultural integration, but in 2019 these broad stereotypes are offensive, outdated and completely irresponsible. Slaughter: while we see brown-skinned bad guys blown up, dismembered and tortured one by one, the film can't even bring itself to enjoy the spectacle. First Blood 5 clearly plays on Trump-era fears of an invasion of immigrants - there's a poignant shot of the border fence as Mexican traffickers gather to attack Rambo's home - but its climactic American massacre is a joyless fun ordeal.
