Movie Review: "Melancholia

in LifeStyle4 years ago

In the happiness index is plummeting, the wealth gap is becoming more and more obvious, dominated and manipulated by negative emotions today, the propaganda and public opinion on the doomsday like an unstoppable plague began to spread unchecked, but also become a variety of films to follow the tried and true popular subject matter, the most vocal when it comes to Hollywood with the kingdom of disaster films, basically have to emerge every year a few, although always able to win the attention of the audience, to gain some revenue. Although always gain the audience's attention, but the plot is mostly nothing new a direction, the usual routine and measurement of the same. However, once such a theme falls into the lens of Lars von Till, who is known as a crazy director, will be able to present a very personal style of video and wild whimsy, "Melancholia" appears with a significant Feng-style label, presenting a unique doomsday assumptions and conclusions, exquisite and beautiful in front of the audience.

The film begins with a foggy, still picture carrying a subtle movement, creating a rather wonderful and moving mood, like a combination of dynamic slides, with a little metaphorical suspense in a lean composition, reminiscent of the eerie and melancholy soundtrack, with the film's gloomy and mysterious atmosphere, the picture is extremely elaborate, like a painting full of artistic value The articulation between the works, and the sudden seemingly chaotic editing, does not feel that the film's fluidity and narrative rhythm, but rather the overall effect is inexplicably apt, but also highlights Lars von Till's very individual and insistent self-play of the image, leaving aside the content, from the audio-visual point of view alone, the film can be described as a magnificent and spectacular feast.

Lars von Till presents two perspectives on the causes of the apocalypse, the human environment and the natural environment, just as he divides the film into two chapters: the first chapter is superficially about how Justin, who is suffering from depression, messes up his own wedding, but from the distinctive characterization of each character, the lonely and indifferent mother, the confused father, the wishful husband, the hypocritical and snobbish The wedding process, coupled with the tedious and rigid rules and regulations, seems to show the reason why the social environment carefully woven and created by human beings will drive themselves step by step to a desperate situation, and Justin is just a typical victim of the masses, this extreme madness has long become a common disease repressed in the hearts of most people in real life, as a self-destructive doomsday. The social and family environment has an inescapable responsibility to cause such a result, and the final scene of the film where the earth is swallowed by "melancholia" seems to have a similar double meaning.

The second chapter mainly reflects the different performance of people under the apocalyptic crisis caused by the natural environment, Lars von Till envisages the situation before a planet called melancholia hits the earth. The sister Claire tries to patiently help Justin out of his predicament, but as the doomsday theory becomes more and more intense, Justin becomes more obsessed with himself, while Claire also unconsciously falls into a deep panic and fear, just when the doomsday is approaching, it is Justin who seems unusually calm and indifferent, while Claire, who has lost her mind, panics and runs around holding her child to seek shelter, under the threat of the natural environment, the The two very different states of expression under the threat of the natural environment, more like a symbolic and reasonable division of human beings facing the end of time, the disease of Justin drowning in the quagmire of pain, naked and summoning the "melancholia", because of the desire to be relieved, and have a considerate husband and understanding son so happy Claire, but expects "melancholia". And Clare, who is so happy with her loving husband and loving son, looks forward to the passing of "melancholia" for fear of losing it. With the premise and background of the end of days, Lars von Till uses sharp and precise expressions to show the two mutually exclusive and extreme real states held by human beings in real life.

Through this film, Lars von Till once again questioned the badly messed up society. The negative and negative personality traits of human character such as arrogance, hypocrisy, cowardice and selfishness, the insignificant existence, the meager power that is not worth mentioning, and the impotence to sit and wait for death were shown one by one in the wedding and the time of the great disaster. The instinctive fear and fear of the unknown, but in the heart of Justin that was soothed and admonished, the social environment given to the human grief and despair, and finally only through the destruction of the natural environment to obtain inner peace and tranquility, which itself is like a major pessimistic interpretation of human society and irony, saddened. In my opinion, "Melancholia" is one of the most accessible works of Lars von Till, except for some stream-of-consciousness portrayal in the opening credits, everything seems clear and concise, to quote the director's words: it is a film worthy of the name. And it's this effect that makes it even more captivating, although there is also a slight sense of formality and deliberate, but still a masterpiece of doom rich in personal connotations.
